Romero Games Issues Update After Funding Pulled by Publisher
There may still be some light at the end of the tunnel.
Despite some reports to the contrary, Romero Games is still alive. With a little luck it will be both "alive and well" soon. Romero Games, a studio founded by industry veterans John Romero and Brenda Romero, were well into the development on its latest game when their undisclosed publisher suddenly pulled funding from the project late last week. This led to the game being worked on at Romero Games being left in limbo. It a... -

RCE Exploit Found in Call of Duty: WWII (Update)
This exploit may exist across other Call of Duty titles as well.
Update (July 7, 2025): Activision has since pulled the "Xbox PC" version of Call of Duty: WWII. This was the version of the game that was available through PC Game Pass. Call of Duty: WWII is still available on Steam and Battle.net, but I probably wouldn't test either of those out if I were you. There's no saying yet if those versions are also vulnerable.
Original: Call of Duty: WWII was added... -

Microsoft's Mass Layoffs Blamed in Part on $80 Billion AI Investment
Over 15,000 people are without a job, thanks to Microsoft's push into AI.
Just this past week, Microsoft kicked off another round of mass layoffs. Over 9,000 employees from Microsoft were laid off, many of which were from various Xbox divisions and studios. Several in-development games were cancelled and an entire studio was shut down. These layoffs are in addition to the 6,000 that were carried out in May 2025 at Microsoft, and the few thousand layoffs made in 2024.

Surprise! The Anthem Servers are Still Alive
Until January.
To the surprise to many, including myself, the servers for the 2019 BioWare developed Anthem are still apparently live. That means you can go, right now, to play Anthem just as god intended.
Unfortunately, you won't have too much time to experience the game because publisher Electronic Arts will be taking those servers down in January 2026. The online only title will be rendered unplayable starting January 12, 2026 as per a new announcement from EA.... -

Sorry, wish we could go to the moon together.
CD Projekt Red made a new announcement at this year's Anime Expo. The game development studio will once again be partnering with studio Trigger to create a new standalone anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. It is called, of course, none other than Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
Today's panel at Anime Expo shared a few early details about this second series. Kai Ikarashi is confirmed to be the director. We also got a... -

Build a Rocket Boy Employees Sent At-Risk Emails as Leslie Benzies Blames 'Saboteurs'
Benzies' statements echo that of his co-CEO prior to launch.
It's time once again to play the blame game. This time, it's none other than Build a Rock Boy's CEO Leslie Benzies blaming "internal and external saboteurs" for the myriad of struggles that have plagued MindsEye.
First, something that is a bit more important: All of Build a Rocket Boy's ~300 employees were sent an at-risk of redundancy email. At-risk emails were also sent to the staff of PlayFusion,... -

Battlefield 6 Development Troubles; Electronic Arts Sets 100 Million Player Goal
It's nice to have dreams.
A new report about the development on the next Battlefield game (codename Glacier) made its way online today. According to insider information, shared via Ars Technica, the behind the scenes development has been anything but smooth within Electronic Arts. Development on the next Battlefield has already had to deal with "culture clashes, ballooning budgets, and major disruptions." These are all contributing to a fear that "parts of the game... -

Subnautica 2's Lead Developers Were All Replaced
The previous leadership team replaced "effectively immediately."
There was a major shakeup at the top of Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds. Parent company Krafton has put former Striking Distance Studio CEO, Steve Papoutsis, in as the new CEO of Unknown Worlds. The previous leadership team at Unknown Worlds - Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire - were all replaced "effective immediately" in a surprise announcement.

Microsoft Makes Massive Cuts to Xbox - 9,000 Employees Laid Off, Perfect Dark and Everwild Cancelled
Phil Spencer's legacy continues to grow.
Microsoft has confirmed that they are laying off upwards of 9,100 employees. This accounts for roughly 4% of its total workforce. This is also the third round of layoffs made at the company over the past few months.
Microsoft's Xbox division and slew of owned development studios, collectively known as Microsoft Gaming, are hit the hardest. Several games, both announced and not announced yet, were cancelled.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate Cinematic Trailer
An actual look at the new expansion.
Bungie has been relatively quiet about the upcoming expansion for Destiny 2, The Edge of Fate. That's kind of weird given that this new expansion launches on July 15th. Today, Bungie held a developer livestream that finally talked about the new content that is coming, while showing off gameplay from Empire Hunts, a piece of content that Bungie added as part of Destiny 2: Beyond Light from late 2020. That's a hell of a choice.
