XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

All good things...

Bungie is calling it quits on Destiny 2. The Sony owned Marathon developer announced the final live-service content update for Destiny 2. Today's announcement was a long time coming and one that most fans saw the writing on the wall for months ago.

That final content update for Destiny 2, Monument of Triumph, takes place on June 9, 2026. Bungie says that they will begin a "new journey as a studio" on that date with includes working on their...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

Epic Games Lays Off Over 1,000 Employees

At least the severance is generous.

Epic Games just laid off over 1,000 employees today as the company blames "the downturn in Fortnite engagement" as a major reason why. The statement issued by Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney says that the company is "spending significantly more" than what they are making. These layoffs are combined with "over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles."

    Today's...

  • How Game Providers Influence Variance and Payouts in Online Casino Games

Online casino games might look similar, but their payouts and volatility can differ dramatically. Understanding how game providers structure variance and return rates helps explain contrasting player experiences. Behind every spin, game studios shape not only the math but also the feel of risk and reward.

While the themes and graphics of digital slots and table games often capture players' attention, it is the underlying design decisions made by game providers that determine how v...

Battlefield Hardline Support Ending on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

I, too, was surprised to hear it was still being supported.

DICE and Electronic Arts will no longer offer any sort of support for Battlefield Hardline on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Come Friday, May 22, Battlefield Hardline will be removed from the digital storefronts for these platforms.

A month later on June 22, the online services for Battlefield Hardline on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be taken down. It is assumed that the single player campaign for Battlefield...

Crimson Desert Surpasses 2 Million Copies Sold, First Major Patch Released

There's an actual stash now with this update.

Pearl Abyss, in addition to rectifying their use of generative AI assets, was also busy celebrating over the weekend. The studio says that Crimson Desert sold more than 2 million copies.

The announcement of selling more than 2 million copies was made on March 20, a mere day after the game was released. It has undoubtedly hit a much higher number by this point.

The studio also released their first major quality-of-life...

Pearl Abyss Admits to Using AI Created 'Placeholder' Art in Crimson Desert

A "comprehensive audit" of assets is also underway.

Fans caught Pearl Abyss using generative AI (genAI) art assets in their newly released game, Crimson Desert. Not only were there obvious genAI created assets present in the game, but Pearl Abyss made no disclosure of using AI through the Crimson Desert Steam page. This is something that Valve allegedly requires, but are quite lax in actually enforcing. It took a bit after initial reporting was made, but Pearl Abyss did make a ...

RuneScape Gets 'Biggest Area Expansion' Ever with Havenhythe

    So much room for activities!

Jagex just launched the first part of Havenhythe for RuneScape. Havenhythe is a new region that "marks the largest area expansion in the MMORPG's 25-year history." They say this area will lean more into the classic RuneScape experience, staying away from those silly things like "the gods and world-ending threats."

The second part is due to be released later this year. There is plenty to keep you busy for a while in this...

Crimson Desert Uses GenAI Slop Art Assets Without Any Steam Disclosure

And Valve is caught not enforcing their own policies.

Crimson Desert features generative AI (genAI) art assets in the final build of the game that released to everyone just yesterday. While I have yet to see the obvious genAI art assets myself, several examples have already been posted to social media and Reddit across a number of discussion threads.

According to some media outlets, there is "debate" about if the assets were made with generative AI or not....

  • Ubisoft Ceases All Game Development at Red Storm Entertainment, Over 100 Laid Off

Will just be a minor support studio.

Ubisoft has ceased all game development at the North Carolina based Red Storm Entertainment. As a result of this decision, 105 employees have been laid off.

According to information shared with Games Industry from an anonymous Ubisoft source, the studio will technically remain open but the few that remain employed there will be working on the Snowdrop engine, IT support, and customer relations.

    Death Stranding 2 PC Release

We have a ship that can go almost anywhere, but you're gonna have to walk anyway.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is now available on PC through storefronts such as Steam and Epic via developer Kojima Productions in collaboration with Nixxes Software. Kojima Productions says that this is a "standalone sequel" to the original Death Stranding, which is true, but also I feel like you really should play the first game to understand a lot of what's going on in this sequel....

  • Valve Just Made a Major Change to How Reloading Works in Counter-Strike 2

Valve Just Made a Major Change to How Reloading Works in Counter-Strike 2

    Why though?

Valve just made one of the biggest gameplay changes ever to Counter-Strike since the addition of the riot shield. As of today's update for Counter-Strike 2, Valve made it so that when you reload your weapon, you will drop the used magazine and discard all of its remaining ammo.

Previously, and this was the case for literal decades now, when you reloaded your weapons the ammo was just dumped back into a total "pool" of ammo. Sure, it wasn't realistic...

Final Major Update Released for FBC: Firebreak

Now also permanently sold at a lower price.

Open House is the final major update for FBC: Firebreak. This final update includes a Friend's Pass as well as a permanently lowered price should you ever want to pick it up.

FBC: Firebreak released back in June 2025 but earned rather mediocre review scores. Even after a revamp to the new player onboarding and substantial changes to other sore spots, the game just failed to gain much traction with players. FBC's disappointing...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
