  • Modern Warfare 4 to be Playable Offline and Do Away with 'Update Requires Restart'

A campaign that you can play offline? Unheard of!
A message in Call of Duty saying 'Update Requires Restart'.

Infinity Ward is already announcing some very nice improvements for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. These aren't issues related to gameplay but rather to some of the underlying systems that have been a thorn in everyone's side for years now.

First up, Infinity Ward confirms that the campaign for Modern Warfare 4 will be playable offline. In prior years, an unstable network connection meant that the game was unplayable, including the single player campaigns. "Well no more," proclaims Infinity Ward. Well, someone there maybe said that at some point. That's certainly a good and much needed change.

More importantly is the other major change Infinity Ward is looking to address: Update Requires Restart. For the past several years now, if you booted up Call of Duty there was a pretty good chance you were hit with the "Update Requires Restart" message. Once you saw that message, it was already too late. The game would have to restart all over to finish applying whatever it was that it needed to update in the background. It was so frequent a view years back when my friends and I still played Call of Duty that it was more surprising when that message didn't show up.
