  • Six Months After Release Spectre Divide is Shutting Down, Mountaintop Studios Shuttered

The studio raised $30 million in funding just in 2024.
A cel-shaded competitive shooter. Two enemies are shooting at each other with weapons while other characters are displayed as holograms on the battlefield.

The tactical competitive first-person shooter, Spectre Divide, is no more. The studio behind the game, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing down. The announcement came from Nate Mitchell, the CEO of Mountaintop Studios, in a letter addressed to Spectre Divide fans.

The first season for Spectre Divide came about just two weeks ago. The release of the game itself came just about six months ago. Mitchell claims that in the first week of the game's release, they had roughly 400,000 people that played the game. He continues to say that they saw a peak concurrent player count of roughly 10,000 across all platforms (though SteamDB shows a peak concurrent player count of 30,971 just for Steam).

Despite this initial taste of success, the game failed to gain traction and the player counts have been steadily declining. The game just isn't pulling in enough money to keep either the game or the studio afloat, which means that Mountaintop "will be closing its doors at the end of this week."

We expect to take Spectre offline within the next 30 days, but we plan on disabling new purchases and refunding money spent since Season 1 launch via the platforms. We’ll be following up with more information on this soon.

We pursued every avenue to keep going, including finding a publisher, additional investment, and/or an acquisition. In the end, we weren’t able to make it work. The industry is in a tough spot right now.

This is a painful update to share. We love Spectre, and we’re incredibly proud of what we built with this community.
Mitchell offers his thanks to the fans and supporters of Spectre Divide. He admits that the launch was met with "a few tough stumbles" but continues on to say that they did everything they could to address the most critical of fan feedback for the launch of the game's first season.

Spectre Divide was a 3v3 competitive shooter where each player controlled two bodies at the same time. It was a free-to-play title that was backed by several notable competitive game streamers such as Ben "CohhCarnage" Cassell and Tarik "tarik" Celik to name just a couple. Michael "shroud" Grzesiek not only backed the game but also served as a lead gameplay advisor on Spectre Divide.

You know, I couldn't remember this game at all until the news post mentioned the two bodies thing. 3v3 games hold about as much interest for me as hero shooters, ie none.

AzaleaBC Took the words right out of my mouth, word for word. INCLUDING the two bodies thing. I'm like, I've never heard of this game and it's already go-... OH THE TWO BODIES THING! Yeah I HAVE heard of this!... Anyway... And then I'm already ready to move on, because the genre simply isn't my cup of tea.
