This week, what seemed like a malicious move on Sony's part may have just been a little whoopsie from the PlayStation 5 company. When firing up their PS5 consoles, instead of seeing a background for the games they were playing, users instead saw old discount promotional images and advertisements for games not yet released.
This change really didn't sit well with PlayStation 5 owners that saw their home screen backgrounds go from artwork displaying the game they had selected to full sized advertisements. It was especially baffling because in most cases it was just showing old advertisements for games you obviously already own. The good news here is that Sony has addressed this issue and your game backgrounds should be restored to how they once were.
Daniel Hiatt, a product lead for Game Hub and Activity Suggestions with PlayStation said (in a now deleted post) that this change came from "a (new) bug with an existing feature." Around 6PM ET, the issue was fixed for PlayStation 5 users. The AskPlayStation Twitter account confirmed that the fix was made.
A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5.
