It's like the 1997 classic only better.
id Software released Quake 2 Enhanced today. This is a re-release of the classic FPS from 1997 but modernized a bit for this re-release in 2023.
Quake 2 Enhanced includes support for up to 4K resolution, widescreen resolutions, enhanced models, improved enemy animations, improved gore, improved and restored AI behaviors, enhanced cinematics, dynamic and colored lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, the original heavy rock soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem and more, and it includes online multiplayer and co-op.
Quake 2 Enhanced also includes both of the original missions packs: The Reckoning and Ground Zero. The Reckoning includes 18 campaign levels and 7 deathmatch maps. Ground Zero includes 15 campaign levels and 14 deathmatch maps.
There is also a new Call of the Machine expansion. This pack from MachineGames includes a whopping 28 new campaign levels and one multiplayer deathmatch map.
Multiplayer support includes 4-player online co-op and local split-screen co-op. There is also competitive multiplayer for up to 16 players, 4-player local split-screen on old-gen hardware, and 8-player local split-screen on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Plus, there is crossplay support across all platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
Finally, this release now also includes the Nintendo 64 port of Quake 2 that you can play through.
Quake 2 Enhanced is free for those that already own Quake 2 on Steam, GOG, and the Microsoft Store. In addition to the old and current console releases, Quake 2 Enhanced is also available through Game Pass. Also I never knew Quake II 64 is different than PC Quake II. But I also didn't know (at the time of its release) that Doom 64 is different than Doom. Oops.
