During their Developer Direct, Microsoft and Turn 10 Studios showed off a fresh look at the upcoming Forza Motorsport. This Xbox Series X|S and PC game promises to "deliver a generational leap in fidelity, immersion, and realism."
Given that the last Forza Motorsport game, Forza Motorsport 7, came out literally one console generation back, I don't know if Turn 10 means that this new Forza Motorsport is a generational leap beyond the previous game, or a generational leap beyond the Xbox Series X|S. This is quite the mystery, but maybe we can figure it out by diving into this new reveal.
First off, Forza Motorsport has no set release date outside of "2023." It will be released for Xbox Series X|S and PC via Microsoft Store and Steam. It will also be out for Game Pass for both platforms, as well as available through Cloud Gaming.
This sim-focused racing title will include over 500 real-world cars at launch. You will be able to customize them with more than 800 unique upgrades and custom modifications. These cars will use something Turn 10 is calling "spectrophotometer." This is a technique that "captures multiple data points of light behavior on a surface." It makes the paint on the cars look more realistic across a variety of colors, metal flake, and gloss levels. Cars will also now have "context-aware damage and dirt buildup that is authentic and unique to each vehicle, gathering more in the low pressure areas like recesses and alcoves."
Turn 10 also says that they made some big advances to their physics simulation. They say that the physics simulation in Forza Motorsport is "greater than Forza Motorsport 5, 6, and 7 combined." What does that even mean? Your guess is as good as mine because that's literally all they're saying about it.
What good is a racing game without racetracks? Good thing that Forza Motorsport will start with new fewer than 20 environments with multiple track layouts.
In addition to fan favorites, you can race on five all-new-to-Motorsport locations including our first in South Africa – Kyalami. Because of the level of detail that went into the tracks through photogrammetry and laser scanned images, the team was able to depict 10 times more realistic detail including highly detailed vegetation and overgrowth. With all the cutting-edge visuals, including tens of thousands of fully animated 3D spectators, each player will feel immersed in the spectacle of racing.
Also new to Forza Motorsport, the game will have dynamic time of day with weather including track temperatures, wet driving surfaces and rubbering in for each track so that no two laps ever play the same. With all of the new features and detail in our track environments, Forza Motorsport will be a generationally new experience with a truly incredible level of authenticity.
