There have been some rumors swirling around for a bit that Facebook was going to announce some new VR hardware soon. And while that rumor is true, this probably isn't the hardware announcement some fans may have wanted.

Today, Facebook announced that they will be releasing a slightly upgraded Oculus Quest 2 model to consumers. Starting on August 24, all base Quest 2 VR headsets will ship with a minimum of 128GB of storage. This is a bump up from the 64GB model that was previously sold from the company. The price will not change, remaining at $299 (USD). There will still also be a 256GB model that will remain at $399.

Oculus will also begin to include a new silicone face mask in the box for all new Quests that are sold to consumers. This will serve as a replacement for the existing face masks that were apparently causing skin irritation for "a very small percentage of Quest 2 customers." The Oculus team at Facebook say that if you already own a Quest 2 or the optional Fit Pack, you can request a silicone cover for free by going here.

As more people got into VR with Quest 2, we started receiving reports that a very small percentage of Quest 2 customers experienced some skin irritation after using the removable foam facial interface that comes with Quest 2 and is also sold separately, including as a part of the Fit Pack. While the rate of reports is small and the majority of reported cases are minor, we’re committed to ensuring our products are safe and comfortable for everyone who uses them.

Today, we’re introducing a new silicone cover for all customers globally, including as part of a joint voluntary recall of the Quest 2 removable foam facial interface with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada. In addition, we’ve been communicating with global regulators and are taking the extra step of temporarily pausing sales of Quest 2 globally while we work to include the new silicone covers in all Quest 2 packages. The new silicone cover fits over the Quest 2 removable foam facial interface and starting on August 24, all Quest 2 headsets will come with a silicone cover included in every box.
If you are in the market for an Oculus Quest 2, be sure to keep in mind that you must have a Facebook account and it must not be banned in order to use your new VR device. If that gives you pause, you may want to look at other devices.
