During Gearbox's PAX East presentation, a small segment was devoted to showing off what Gearbox Publishing is up to. One of the reveals today was for Risk of Rain 2. Obviously, we already knew about Risk of Rain 2. That wasn't the big surprise today.
No, the big surprise today was the fact that Risk of Rain 2 is available right now on Steam Early Access. This Early Access release allows players to go in alone or with up to three additional friends for four player co-op action. You can play as both new and returning characters from the previous game.
The obvious difference in this sequel is the fact that the game is now with an added dimension. While the original was a 2D affair, this one is in full 3D in massive levels. There is lore to discover, giant bosses to tackle, leaderboards, and over 75 unlockables.
Developer Hopoo Games expects that Risk of Rain 2 will be in Early Access for roughly one year. Once the game leaves Early Access, the developer says that it will have more content, more polish, and a true ending that Early Access won't have. However, the price will also increase for the final release. Right now, the Early Access release is just $19.99 (USD).
