CIA operative Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson are back to save the world, in a manner of speaking. Set in 1981 during the height of the Cold War, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes everything you know about how titles are structured and throw it out the window.
The game is aiming for release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 13, 2020. In addition to the stand-alone release of Black Ops Cold War, there will be some integration with the current Warzone battle royale that is out right now for everyone. Specifically, there will be inventory items that can be used in both titles. Warzone will also get access to some Modern Warfare content that was not available previously. This content includes access to Operators and weapon blueprints. More details about all of this will be revealed at a later date.
The PlayStation Blog says that Black Ops Cold War is a "cross-generation and cross-platform title." This means that players will be able to able to team up regardless of whether they are on current-gen or next-gen platforms. This also means that when you make the jump to the next-gen, all of your progression and stats will go with you. More details on this are found at this Activision FAQ. We do know that one of the PlayStation-exclusive perks is that they will get early access, to the tune of five whole days, to the open beta compared to everyone else.
As part of the "next-gen tax" that some companies are trying to justify, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will retail starting at $69.99 (USD) on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. You can expect other companies will continue this unfortunate trend for more expensive releases on next-gen platforms.
A reveal for Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer will take place on September 9.
