  • At Least One AI Slop Creation Tool is Dead as OpenAI Pulls Plug on Sora

Disney also pulls out of $1 billion deal with OpenAI.

OpenAI discontinued Sora, their generative AI (genAI) video creation tool that launched in 2025. According to Variety, no reason was provided by the company for the decision to abruptly pull the plug on Sora.

The announcement of Sora being discontinued was brief and made only through Twitter.

We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.

We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work. – The Sora Team
Shortly after OpenAI took Sora out back, Disney ended their partnership with OpenAI. Disney had planned to take a $1 billion stake in OpenAI. Originally, Disney and AI would enter into a three-year long licensing agreement. The deal would have allowed Sora to generate videos based on about 200 "masked, animated, or creature characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars."

A Disney rep said in a statement to Variety: “As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
Sora was promoted as being able to "turn your ideas into videos with hyperreal motion and sound." It was sold to users as a way to "cast yourself and your friends in videos as characters." You probably know it more for how it created "realistic" yet extremely obvious AI videos with various Hollywood actors in different scenarios. A lot of those videos typically featured the fake actors engaging in a very stilted fight that made the WWE look real by comparison.

OpenAI taking Sora out back made me crack up. With that said, it doesn't look like we're poking the AI bubble hard enough. Disney is still gung-ho about AI video generation, so their plans haven't changed. They either didn't want to support Sora, leading to its demise (odd since I wasn't under the impression Sora was relying on investor funding), or they had to cancel the partnership because Sora is shut down. Either way Disney is looking for the next Sora so the bubble stays (infuriatingly) strong. And since OpenAI isn't going anywhere, it just means they have some sort of plan to release some sort of tool to continue screwing over artists, writers, and the Earth. All so the Board of Directors can continue to enjoy their wealth. I wonder if it's possible for AI to be developed enough to make executive decisions without screwing up, causing the Board of Directors to finally "stand with the public and fight back against AI" in some dramatic moral stance and denying their wealth is finally being threatened?

Okay, after more reading it's clearer that Disney had no idea, and was just as surprised the deal isn't happening. Although no money was exchanged yet, so Disney didn't lose anything and no breach of contract occurred.
