  • RIG and Ora Graphene Announce New Hi-Fi Gaming Headset - RIG R5 Spear Max HD

Features special GrapheneQ technology for the drivers.
A photo of the new gaming headset from NACON, the RIG R5 Spear Pro Max HD, next to a computer. The headset is almost all black with thick ear cushions and a metal headband with cushioning.

Nacon just announced a new premium product for their RIG R-Series of audio headsets today. The new RIG R5 Spear Max HD is being built alongside technology from Ora Graphene Audio and their innovative GrapheneQ drivers.

According to the announcement, Ora makes patented GrapheneQ drivers for audio devices. They are made "from pure graphene" and the GrapheneQ membrane "offers the ideal mechanical properties for headphone speakers." Apparently, graphene for drivers allows for "improved audio reproduction and ultra-low distortion." This is thanks to the high stiffness and low density of graphene itself.

All of this apparenlty combinues into "improved spatial audio, allowing players to localize sounds and objects with enhanced speed and precision." This technology will also be combined with an included USB-C DAC and Dolby Atmos 3D support for clear and immersive audio.

The included DAC is the R5 USB-C DAC. This digital-to-analog converter supports up to a 32-bit/384kHz sample rate. This included DAC also serves as a power passthrough for gaming on portable devices. It also includes an auxiliary port for streaming setups. The Dolby Atmos 3D audio does seem to be limited to Xbox and PCs running Windows 10 or 11 though.

As mentioned, this is a gaming headset, not just a pair of headphones. The R5 Spear Max HD includes an expanded "SNAP+LOCK mod system" that makes use of magnetics to quickly attach and detach some modular components on the headset. This allows gamers to swap their microphone between the left and right ear cups.

This SNAP+LOCK system also applies to the ear cushions, allowing them to be replaced quite easily. This system also applies to the plates on the outside of the drivers and are compatible with all other R5 Mod-Plate designs. The SNAP+LOCK system will also make upgrading to some future accessories a breeze. Nacon says that they are already working on a broadcast mic option, enhanced-isolation earcup covers, and more. Those won't be out until some time after this headset launches.

The R5 Spear MAX HD also includes the usual creature comforts for headphones and headsets. There is a memory foam head cushion, metal headband, and dual-material memory foam ear cushions.

Some of the more technical details on the RIG R5 Spear Max HD can be found below. This headset is going to be made available through Amazon starting on March 15, 2026 for a suggested price of $149.99. Nacon says that the RIG R5 Spear Max HD can be used on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, portable devices, and PC.

I'm still using the RIG 900 MAX HX headset as my daily drivers. I'm very curious to see how this new headset stands up to the 900 MAX for audio clarity.

I keep forgetting they're both a game publisher and hardware manufacturer. I think I'll keep my eye on this. I want Dolby Atmos, but not very happy at how restricted it is (my phone has Dolby Atmos - would be nice to use an adapter to connect it to my phone if I wanted to). I don't know if I want this or a Sony Bluetooth headset like the XM series. I just know my Bose NC-700 was a critical expensive mistake, but I DID have the foresight NOT to update its firmware. I lose one hour of battery tracking (as in it'll never reach the full battery length as advertised), and I don't get an equalizer, but I DO get functioning audio (no random static) and responsive pairing. Still, it's an unsupported device and needs to be replaced eventually. Right now I'm just replacing the earcups until I'm ready to afford a new headset, but I don't know what yet. I just know i want Dolby Atmos, and not restrict myself to say... Whatever PlayStation uses (I just realized they never branded their 3D audio did they?).
