The string of Nvidia's rather half-baked driver updates continues today for those with Nvidia GPUs. Today, Nvidia released GeForce Game Ready Driver 576.40 to the public. This new driver is supposed to be game ready for the forthcoming release of DOOM: The Dark Ages. However, the patch notes include two rather major known issues for DOOM: The Dark Ages, with at least one requiring a full reboot of your PC to fix.
First and foremost, a brief warning: If you have been experiencing an issue where your monitors go completely black and do not return when installing new Nvidia drivers, you may want to download 576.40 directly from Nvidia and install it that way. Users have found that trying to update their drivers through the new Nvidia app more often results in these black screen issues than when they install via the dedicated driver update executable.
Should you encounter this black screen issue when installing new Nvidia drivers, simply wait about 5-10 minutes for the drivers to finish installing in the background. After a comfortable amount of time has passed force shutdown your PC. When you restart your PC, you can check to see if you are on the latest drivers or not. While users with 40-series and 50-series cards have more often mentioned this issue, I had it happen to me on the previous driver update with my GTX 1080 Ti, so it seems as though no Nvidia series is immune.
Today's 576.40 driver is a "game ready" driver for DOOM: The Dark Ages, yet still includes a couple of known issues for DOOM: The Dark Ages.
- KNOWN ISSUES Below is a list of known issues with the DOOM: The Dark Ages Game Ready drivers, along with their workarounds. We are working to resolve them in an upcoming driver release.
- Issue: If you are playing on a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU and enable G-sync (supported display required) or V-SYNC plus DLSS Multi Frame Generation through the NVIDIA App you can crash the game.
- Resolution: Until there is a driver fix available, the workaround for this issue is to either disable one of these options in the NVIDIA App or if you want both enabled, set them in-game.
- Issue: Users with NVIDIA GPUs may find that Alt-Tabbing while launching the game can cause the game to launch in the background and not be accessible.
- Resolution: This is a known driver issue. Until a fix is available in a driver update, to avert this issue, avoid Alt-Tabbing while the game is launching. If encountered, it can be resolved by restarting your PC.
- Issue: If you are playing on a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU and enable G-sync (supported display required) or V-SYNC plus DLSS Multi Frame Generation through the NVIDIA App you can crash the game.
There are several other open issues listed as part of this driver update. For instance, there are still issues with the lighting in Ghost of Tsushima. Cyberpunk 2077 still crashes under certain conditions, and several other games all have some form of crashing issues noted. The full details on those, along with the few fixes included in the 576.40 update can be found below. Keep in mind that these are only the officially recognized "open issues" shared by Nvidia. Users have reported many other issues related to Nvidia drivers over the past several months that may not be mentioned below. A special thanks to Reddit for the copy and paste of the below changelog.
