  • Polygon Hit with Mass Layoffs After Being Sold to Valnet

Several amazing game industry writers and editors are now without a job.

Gaming news site Polygon was just sold off to one of the so-called cesspools of the Internet, Valnet. Before the sale was even announced, now former Editor-in-Chief at Polygon, Chris Plante, made the announcement of the layoffs on his personal social media.

Valnet is one of those companies that pulls in bits of information and materials from a large pool of sources. Often the sites owned by Valnet are labeled as "clickbait" and "content mills" as they use AI tools to pump out content and to allegedly game search engine results.

Besides today's acquisition of Polygon, Valnet owns gaming focused sites such as:
    • GameRant
    • TheGamer
    • OpenCritic
    • DualShockers
    • Fextralife
    Valnet also owns:
    • ScreenRant
    • How-To Geek
    • MovieWeb
    • Collider
    • CBR
    • XDA Developers
    • MakeUseOf
If you have visited many of these sites recently, you probably have a pretty good idea at the direction that Polygon will soon go.

Polygon co-founder and former EIC Chris Plante dropped news of the layoffs through Bluesky earlier today.

I'm no longer with Polygon. If you're hiring, please consider the many talented writers and editors now on the market. Every one of them deserves a spot on your staff. I won't be talking more about the sale because I wasn't involved.

Going to hang out with my kid. Taking wins where I can.

The sale was announced via a press release, but did not mention any layoffs.

Several other now former Polygon employees took to their own socials to announce that they were laid off. They include writer Michael McWhertor, former senior reporter Nicole Carpenter, Petrana Radulovic, Ana Diaz, and Pete Volk. Matthew Reynolds, Polygon's former deputy editor, says that he's also stepping away from Polygon following today's news.

I wish nothing but the best for all of the employees that were let go. The Polygon we knew is now no more and moving forward it will be nothing but a shell of its former self.

I didn't know OpenCritic is owned by Valnet. Is OpenCritic still reliable? I miss their old system of having major media outlets as one section of reviews, and smaller outlets as another section of reviews, each with their respective average total.

K-16 : As far as I know, Opencritic is still reliable as far as review scores are concerned. Unlike say MetaCritic, they don't use a weighted average when determining average review scores. I cannot speak for any other content on their site.

Some of those sites have some good articles. Most are not. Take their game guides for example, where they intermix "players" and "fans" as if AI generated.

Starfield Review Averages Sit at Upper 80s
    by Shawn Zipay
See what critics are saying about the most anticipated game of 2023.

The first major wave of reviews are in for Starfield and, well, they aren't bad. They're not super great either but they certainly aren't bad.

According to OpenCritic, Starfield currently sits at an average review score of 87% with 93% of all reviewers recommending the game. The scores for this one seem to range from as low as 50% to as high as 100% (or 10 out of 10 to be more specific).

Battlefield 6 Reviews - Solid Multiplayer, Terrible Single Player Campaign
    by Shawn Zipay
The multiplayer more than makes up for the "dull" campaign.

The initial batch of reviews for Battlefield 6 indicate that yes, Battlefield is back! This is assuming you ignore the "short," "disappointing," and "dull" single player campaign. At least the multiplayer component seems to more than make up for the massively disappointing campaign.

The average critical score on OpenCritic for Battlefield 6 is 84% with 92% of all critics...
