Despite a rather pathetic 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, A Minecraft Movie demolished box office records for a video game film adaptation. This weekend, A Minecraft movie pulled in a massive $157 million at the domestic box office and another $144 million at the global box office.
A Minecraft Movie surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the biggest domestic debut for a video game adaptation. The Super Mario Bros. Movie pulled in $146.4 million during its debut three-day weekend.
The cost for A Minecraft Movie is reported to be $150 million (minus global marketing costs). In the real world, this should mean that the film is already making a profit for Warner Bros. However, with how accounting works in Hollywood, A Minecraft Movie may not end up making any profit for the studio.
A Minecraft Movie hit theaters on April 4, 2025. It stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa. The film is based off of the extremely popular Mojang developed game, Minecraft. It contains such hit bits like Jack Black exclaiming "I... am Steve!" and "chicken jockey."
