  • System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition Renamed to System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

Will soon be available on PC and consoles.

Nightdive Studios says that the System Shock 2 remaster they've been working on will soon be released. A firm release date will be revealed at GDC 2025 during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase stream. GDC 2025 begins March 17, 2025. The Future Game Show Spring Showcase will air on March 20th.

Beyond this tease of a release date, Nightdive also announces that this remaster is no longer called System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. The studio has spent so long working on this remaster that it's now time for the 25th anniversary since the original release of System Shock 2. As such, this remaster will instead be called System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.

Outside of the change in name, it doesn't seem like there will be any other changes from what was originally planned when System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition was first announced. This will be a remaster of the 1999 sci-fi title. It will be built for modern platforms using Nightdive's KEX Engine.

You can expect some enhanced visuals such as 4K resolution support and support for 120FPS. There will also be quality of live improvements such as FOV adjustments, post-processing settings, widescreen support, and the like. It will also include co-op support, proper gamepad support, and full mod support.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

And yes, I know the key art at the top says System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition and not 25th Anniversary Remaster for the title.

Ah, the one game the internet has been bashing Nightdive Studios for taking so damn long. There are people who are convinced it's vaporware, and those who pre-ordered System Shock Remake are furious they didn't get this game (yet). Meanwhile I'm angry that SiN: Reloaded still needs... A developer (I'm still convinced Nightdive's involvement is to provide the KEX Engine and oversee someone else develop the actual game). It's like Rihanna taking forever to produce an album because she keeps getting pregnant.

Also why do you keep calling this the 25th Anniversary Remaster when the key art at the top clearly sa-...............*Cough.* Ahem... Hmm? I didn't say anything. Anyway, I'll see myself out.

I've never played SiN so that's one i'd like to check out, however i'm most excited for a potential remaster of The Darkness, the only flaw in that game was the aim sensitivity so with that fixed and a PC version with mouse control it would be legendary.

I'm glad they're actually taking the time, because I think it will indeed lead to something special. As one of the forty people who bought the original, I'm really looking forward to it.

I also bought SiN episode 1, but yeah.

I'm on the more skeptical side. Where Nightdev will eventually get around to finding a replacement developer after finishing their skyscraper list of other more interesting projects, and then spend a year or two producing a mediocre remaster that leaves fans running back to SiN: Gold.

And yet I'm still keeping an eye on it, while relieved Slipgate Ironworks and 3D Realms aren't involved anymore given Phantom Fury (despite the irony of SiN having elements inspired by Duke Nukem 3D, so it should've been a match made in Heaven). Strange. I'm skeptical yet I still want it? Does it help that I'm replaying SiN: Gold on and off (and aiming for the path with the most levels)?

I also bought Episode 1 and kind of regretted it given how it was more Half-Life than SiN (Blade sure got a lot more quiet since he's no longer inspired by Duke Nukem), followed by how quickly they abandoned it. I did like how useful the new Magnum is though. Shame Phantom Fury went with the old (and smaller) model.

I forgot about The Darkness. **** it would be good to see Jenny again. I still haven't decided which voice actor of Jackie I liked more. And also, we uh, EVER going to see Jenny be free, or is she a permanent hostage for the afterlife? Maybe I should've switched my head canon to her being a ward staff member. She seems happier there and doesn't mind slow dancing with the patients. Look, I just want Jenny to be happy, and The Darkness to be more like Tom Hardy's Venom (with the voice of Mike Patton).

...Damn I had more thoughts about this than I realized. Even I hate this wall of text. I'll uh, see myself out.
