  • Riot Games Announces More Layoffs, This Time Impacting the League of Legends Team

Riot says it's not about saving money.

On October 15th, Riot Games announced that an undisclosed number of employees were laid off from their company. This is the second round of layoffs at Riot Games just in the past year alone. In January 2024, Riot laid off 530 employees and shut down Riot Forge.

Today's layoff announcement did not publicly share how many employees were being let go. However, a separate report from GamesIndustry states that 32 employees are impacted. Of those 32 employees, 27 of them were on the League of Legends' team and the remaining five employees were part of the studio's "publishing side."

Riot's full announcement was made through Twitter from Riot co-founder Marc Merrill. As part of the statement, Merrill assured players that they were "not slowing down work on the game you love."

We’re investing heavily in solving today’s challenges faster while also building for the future.

As part of these changes, we’ve made the tough decision to eliminate some roles. This isn’t about reducing headcount to save money—it’s about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great for another 15 years and beyond. While team effectiveness is more important than team size, the League team will eventually be even larger than it is today as we develop the next phase of League.
Employees hit by the layoffs this week will be supported with a severance package that includes a minimum of six months' pay, annual bonus, job placement assistance, health coverage, and more.
