The Borderlands movie came and went like a fart in the wind. After being panned by critics and an absolutely abysmal opening weekend (just $8.8 million), the Borderlands film is no longer being shown in theaters.
From its debut on August 8, 2024 until now, Borderlands pulled in an estimated $31 million at the global box office. This amount is just barely enough to cover the cost of the marketing budget for the film, which is estimated to be $30 million. The production of the film itself is estimated to have cost $115 million.
For a major Hollywood film that includes high profile stars such as Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, this $31 million figure is bad. It's like really bad. For a little bit of context, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) pulled in an estimated $1.36 billion globally. That terrible Doom movie from 2005 saw a global box office pull of over $58 million. If you want to get really stupid with the comparisons, even the 1993 Mario Bros. movie pulled in over $45 million (only after inflation though).
Next up for Borderlands? Well, it can be safely assumed that the film will be making its way to Blu-ray and perhaps some streaming services soon enough. There is also a new Borderlands game coming at some point. All we've seen from Borderlands 4 was a brief teaser trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live.
