When Frostpunk 2 launches on September 20, 2024 it will arrive ready to handle user created mods. This is thanks to the launch of the FrostKit mod tool that will ship alongside Frostpunk 2 next month.
The initial release of FrostKit will be a beta. The team at 11 bit studios say that this tool will "evolve over time," especially as they take community feedback into consideration. Frostpunk 2 technical director Szymon Jablonski says that the move to Unreal Engine made it easy to overcome many of the limitations that prevented extensive modding in the first game.
Frostpunk 2 is out on Steam and PC Game Pass on September 20 with a console release coming at a later date. The Digital Deluxe edition offers three-days early access to the game as well as future access to three DLCs and additional content.
A trailer showcasing the Frostpunk 2 modding tool, created in collaboration with mod.io, offers a glimpse of the possibilities. Notably, players will be able to create custom maps, populate them with custom models, and set their new cities—whether ancient, cosmic, or differentiated in thousands of other ways from the original frosty-apocalypse setting—against custom scenarios.
The beta version of the modding tool will enable creators to access most of its functionalities, although these will be iteratively upgraded based on community feedback. This feedback will serve the development team as a valuable insight into what works well and what needs improvement. To kick off this process, the tool will be first tested through a closed beta with selected members of the modding community before the official release.
