A live-action series based on the God of War series has just been announced by Amazon and Sony. The series is entering into early co-production from Amazon Prime Video, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions. Cory Barlog, the director on 2018's God of War and co-director for God of War Ragnarök will serve as an executive producer on this series.

Amazon says that this series will adapt the most recent two titles that Santa Monica Studios released. That seems to suggest that the series will focus on Midgard and Norse mythology rather than the earlier titles where Kratos was a bit more unhinged. The series will follow a similar story path of the 2018 game where Kratos journeys to the highest peak in all the realms in order to spread the ashes of his late wife. He will presumably be accompanied by his son, Atreus.

Rafe Judkins will be the showrunner and an executive producer on the God of War series alongside Cory Barlog. Judkins was previously the creator of The Wheel of Time series for Amazon. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will be writers and producers on the series. They previously worked on Iron Man and Children of Men.

“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” says Amazon Studios' head of global television Vernon Sanders.

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” adds Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope.
As the God of War series is just entering production, there are no details on actors, when it may be released, or much of anything else yet. The most recent release, God of War Ragnarök, took home several awards at The Game Awards last week.
