The Game Awards

Okay, so the Game Awards happened. The half video game-Oscars, half game-announcement-venue was exciting to the say the least. Some of our favourite games won, and some didn’t. And many of our future-favourite games were announced along with many other things. It was a whole affair, and a long one, lasting over three hours.

But don’t worry you don’t have to sit through it. We’ve gathered all the highlights — all the nominees, winning games — in one place just for you. Just take a few minutes and you’ll be up to date on everything important that went down. Though we did skip the numerous trailers and the Global Game Citizen segments, mostly because we were busy playing games in casinos which run on Nektan gaming during the ceremony. :P

If you’re interested in knowing about female Afghan game developers, a game charity to help military veterans, and a young gamer who talked about how he designs games in Roblox to raise awareness about mental health issues after his father committed suicide, feel free to head over to the official website and catch the live stream. But for everything else, here we go.

The Game Awards: Nominees and Winners
  • Game of the Year - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won the title of the Game of the Year. Though we were rooting for Control and Death Stranding, Sekiro is still more than deserving of the win.
Other nominations included Control, Death Stranding, Super Smash Bros: Ultimate, Resident Evil 2, and The Outer Worlds.
  • Best Game Direction - It was almost obvious who’d take this title home — Death Stranding, thanks to Hideo Kojima.
Other nominations included Control, Resident Evil 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and The Outer Worlds.
  • Best Narrative - The Game Awards had a little surprise for us with the Best Narrative award going to Disco Elysium.
It was going head to head against A Plague Tale: Innocence, Control, Death Stranding, The Outer Worlds.
  • Best Art Direction - Control took home the title for the Best Art Direction. With such an intriguing premise and unique set pieces in each chapter, Control earned the title.
Other nominations included: Death Stranding, Gris, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
  • Best Score/Music - With a composer as talented as Ludvig Forssell and the stakes as high as in Death Stranding, it was only expected that the Kojima’s game would get this award.
Other nominations included Cadence of Hyrule, Devil May Cry 5, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Sayonara Wild Hearts.
  • Best Audio Design - Thanks to its crisp, well-engineered audio, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was awarded the Best Audio Design.
Other nominations included Control, Death Stranding, Gears 5, Resident Evil 5, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  • Best Performance - Mads Mikkelsen who played Cliff in Death Stranding received the Best Performance title.
Other nominations included Ashly Burch as Parvati Holcomb (The Outer Worlds), Courtney Hope as Jesse Faden (Control), Laura Bailey as Kait Diaz (Gears 5), Matthew Porretta as Dr Casper Darling (Control), and Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges (Death Stranding).
  • Games for Impact - Among games that were thought-provoking and had a pro-social meaning or message, Gris made the biggest dent.
Other nominations included Concrete Genie, Kind Words, Life is Strange 2, and Sea of Solitude.
  • Best Ongoing Game - Among games that had outstanding development of ongoing content that evolved the player experience over time, Fortnite won, obviously.
Its competitors were Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Final Fantasy 14, and Rainbow Six Siege.
  • Best Independent Game - Disco Elysium won the award for making outstanding creative and technical achievement in a game made outside the traditional publisher system.
Other nominations included Baba is You, Katana Zero, Outer Wilds, and Untitled Goose Game (our personal favourite).
  • Other winners - Getting into specific categories, Call of Duty: Mobile won the Best Mobile Game, Destiny 2 won the Best Community Support award, Beat Saber won the Best VR/AR game, Devil May Cry 5 won the Best Action Game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won the award for the Best Action/Adventure Game, Disco Elysium won the Best RPG, Super Smash Bros.
