As it stands, the demand for the NES Classic far out paces the rate in which those little bits of nostalgia can be supplied to retailers. So Nintendo, in their infinite wisdom has decided to discontinue the NES Classic.
"Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.

"NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans."

This now means that the highly sought after device will soon only be sold via third-parties such as eBay. Not only that, but you can probably expect to pay a significant amount of money for a device that had an MSRP of just $59.99 (USD).

With many hopeful buyers still unable to find the console months after its release (November 2016), what could the reason be for this move? Maybe they lost a license to one or more of the 30 classic games included on the NES Classic. Maybe Nintendo wasn't a huge fan of how people found a way to play ROMs on the device. It's possible that Nintendo is going to roll out a new NES Classic in the months ahead, but right now the company has said that they have nothing to announce regarding the future of the "Classic" brand.

Whatever the case is, there are going to be a lot of unhappy would-be buyers out there and some very happy eBay sellers. I suggest that people who seriously wanted the NES Classic should perhaps check out something like Raspberry Pi.
