Unity Changes Terms Once More, Commits to 'Being an Open Platform'

Unity has had a real interesting seven days. Last week, SpatialOS from developer Improbable was apparently barred from being used within Unity development. SpatialOS is a robust tool that many Unity developers use to add multiplayer to their games. For a time, Unity's new Terms, which went live in early December but were only clarified to Improbable last week, actually affected games that were already released. This led to some quick back and forths between Improbable and Unity through their respective sites. It all seemed to quiet down when Improbable and Epic Games formed a joint $25...

EA Cancels Yet Another Star Wars Game (Update)

A headline like "EA Cancels Another Star Wars Game" feels like they're a dime a dozen these days. I think EA may have cancelled as many Star Wars games as they have closed studios at this point. Here we are again and here EA is with another cancelled EA game on their hands. This time, the development studio has decided to cancel its open-world Star Wars game that EA Vancouver had been working on. Prior to EA Vancouver working on this title, it was in development from Visceral Games. Of course, EA shut down Visceral Games back in 2017. In fact, when Visceral was working on the game it wasn't an open-world title but rather a more linear action-adventure game that was being directed by...

Review: Last Year: The Nightmare (PC)

A solid asymmetrical survival-horror game that's light on content.

Asymmetrical multiplayer games have been going steady for the past few years now. Some of the biggest games in that particular genre include the long departed Evolve, the still ongoing Dead by Daylight, and even Friday the 13th if you're into that sort of thing. You can now add in Last Year: The Nightmare to the mix as it combines 5 versus 1 multiplayer with elements of survival-horror. As with those other titles, Last Year places one player in the shoes of a bloodthirsty murderer while the rest of the players play as one of five teenagers trying to survive and escape. What it delivers is a well-crafted gameplay experience that ultimately comes up short on content. Last Year: The Nightmare relies on a number of tried and true horror movie clich├ęs. The group of teenagers include the nerdy kid, the popular girl, a stereotypical jock, and m...

Jump Force Open Beta Begins January 18

Come January 18th, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will get to try out Jump Force in what Bandai Namco is calling an "open beta weekend." Be it a true beta or a "demo" is besides the point because what really matters is that you will finally get to test drive the fighting game that we have been passing along news about now for months.

Here's how it's going to go down. First off, there will be four separate three-hour long sessions:

Secondly? Well, that's kind of it. Just make sure you download the demo and you can play during...

Bungie Ditches Activision, Acquires Rights to Destiny

Moving forward, all future Destiny titles will be self-published by Bungie. I guess even Activision had to tap out after the latest Destiny 2 puzzle, eh?

After eight years, Bungie and Activision are parting ways and with it so does Activision's control over the Destiny franchise. Bungie announced today that they are acquiring publishing rights to their popular shooter.

Mere moments ago, Bungie made the announcement on their website in an aptly named news entry called "Our Destiny."

Bungie continues on to say that they will...

  • Valve Overhauls the Steam Chat System

Valve Overhauls the Steam Chat System

For the first time in years, Valve has provided a drastic overhaul to the Friends and Chat system within Steam. It has an all-new look with some new functionality such as embedding things like images, Giphy links, Twitter, Twitch, and even YouTube. You can even use something like /giphy to insert a random Giphy image, because that seems safe?

It's got improvements to group chats, improvements to voice chat, it has a two week long chat history you can keep, it has a new "persona" invisible mode, a new way to rename friends, a new way to trade, a new way to add friends, and more!

You can try this new functionality out in two different ways. You can either opt into the current Steam client beta by going to Steam > Settings > Account and opting into the currently available beta OR you can try it out via your web browser....

  • Valve Sends Cease and Desist to CS:GO Skin Trade Website OPSkins

Valve Sends Cease and Desist to CS:GO Skin Trade Website OPSkins

Earlier today, Valve sent a cease and desist request to OPSkins, a website that lives and thrives off of the off-site betting, buying, and selling of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skins. Valve even went so far as to make a news post about what they did today via the Counter-Strike website.
For the last two years, Valve has enforced our Steam Subscriber Agreement terms as described in this post.

In March 2018, we applied a seven-day trade cooldown to CS:GO trades, to fight fraud and misuse of Steam Accounts.

On June 6, OPSkins launched ExpressTrade, which uses Valve intellectual property and violates our Steam Subscriber Agreement, and is already being used by other businesses to avoid Valve policies. Today we messaged OPSkins to cease us

  • Valve Will Continue to Do Nothing About What Games Appear on Steam

Valve Will Continue to Do Nothing About What Games Appear on Steam

Valve has essentially said "fuck it, put whatever you want on Steam just so long as we get a piece."

This seems to be the general tone of today's blog post by Valve's Erik Johnson. The company that runs Steam continues to show that they kind of don't really care about what appears on the platform so long as it's not "illegal or straight up trolling." Of course, Valve also noted that they are the ones who ultimately decide what is "illegal" or "trolling" as it applies to games on their platform.
(W)e've decided that the right approach is to allow everything onto the Steam Store, except for things that we decide are illegal, or straight up trolling. Taking this approach allows us to focus less on trying to police what should be on Steam, and

  • Valve Pulls School Shooting Simulator from Steam, Calls Developer a 'Troll'

Valve Pulls School Shooting Simulator from Steam, Calls Developer a 'Troll'

Valve has called the developer of Active Shooter a "troll with a history of customer abuse." Active Shooter was slated to release on June 6 from developer Revived Games publisher ACID. It was a game that would allow players to experience a mass shooting from either the point of view of the shooter or the point of view of the SWAT team that was tasked with taking them down. As you may have already guessed, some people were rightfully pissed off about this. Thankfully Valve stepped in and have decided to pull the game from Steam. In addition, they have also removed Revived Games and ACID from Steam. I would like to believe that this would have happened regardless of ...

  • Valve Announces Spring Cleaning Event for Steam

Valve Announces Spring Cleaning Event for Steam

Do you play "video games?" Do you play these "video games" on Steam? Then this news is for you. Starting today, Valve is kicking off what they're calling the "Spring Cleaning" event on Steam. It involves video games and playing them.
Spring Cleaning. That wonderful time of year where people go through their closets to make space, and in doing so discover forgotten gems lost to the bottom of plastic storage totes. But why should the joy of rediscovering a kitschy t-shirt, or a well-hidden holiday gift, be limited to cleaning our homes? With so many wonderful games out there it's easy to have a backlog of titles that you always intended to go play, but for whatever reason never got around to. and

Valve Releases Steam Link App for Android; iOS Release Pending

Valve just passed along word that the Steam Link app is now available for immediate download for Android devices. The iOS release is coming soon "pending further review from Apple." Still, this is a bit earlier than the anticipated May 21 release window.
The Steam Link app allows gamers to experience their Steam library of games on their Android (phone, tablet, and TV) devices while connected to the same 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet as their Steam gaming computer (PC, Linux, Mac). Initially offered in beta, the Steam Link app for Android supports Android 5.0 and features support for the Steam Controller and other Bluetooth

The Dota 2 International 2018 Battle Pass is Here

Valve just announced that The International Battle Pass 2018 has arrived for Dota 2. As always, 25% of each Battle Pass purchase goes towards the prize pool for The International.

Some of the new content in 2018 includes the addition of a multi-team "dungeon clash" called The Underhollow. There is also the Cavern Crawl, Sprays, Team Challenge, Custom Lane Creeps, Mutation Mode, Role-Based Matchmaking Queue, and much more. There are also some returning favorites from previous years. And yes, you can still spend more money to quickly level up your Battle Pass again.

Valve Puts Out Last Call for Portal 2 Nendoroids

Whenever I get a press release sent to my inbox from Valve, there's always a bit of shock and excitement that accompanies the notification. Is it a new game? Is is the Panorama update for CSGO? No, sadly, this email today was none of that. It was instead a notification that the limited-time offer for Portal 2 Nendoroids is coming to a close in a few days.

This includes the P-Body Nendoroid and the Atlas Nendoroid. You can get each of them for 5,800 Japanese Yen or about $53 (USD).

Both P-Body and Atlus come with essentially the same things, so I'll just paste the description for P-Body here.

Pro Counter-Strike Player Suspended After Making Racist Comment

A "professional" Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player has been suspended from the Faceit Pro League for one month after he called another player a "fucking monkey." Those were the words uttered by Nils "k1to" Gruhne of Alternate Attax towards Joao "felps" Vasconcellos during a European FPL game.

Gruhne later issued a remark via Twitter saying that "we have (all) made mistakes and learned." Faceit still decided to take action against Gruhne. Milos "Mikey" Nedeljkovic issued this statement about the suspension.
What happened yesterday is something that went beyond being a genuine joke among players at the point that one member

Building a Better TGN Part 2 - Overview of New and Returning Features
    Shawn Zipay

Last week I kind of detailed the process of what it took to even get the site up and running following the upgrade to vBulletin 5.4.5 from 4.2.1. Today, I'll go over some of the new features for all of you members out there, plus some of the more forward facing changes made to the site. I'll try to make this short and a bit more concise than last week's entry. Custom StyleThe most obvious thing you will notice when visiting the site is the current site design. I worked for a long time customizing a site design from one of the default vBulletin designs. Customizations include, but are not limited to:...

Building a Better TGN Part 1 - Banks and Technical Issues
    Shawn Zipay
As you have probably noticed by now, Total Gaming Network is looking a little bit different than what it was only about a month ago. We are now on the latest version of vBulletin, which just happens to be 5.4.5. We are also on a far more up-to-date version of PHP. We are also on some better server hardware than we were previously. The Boring Technical StuffThis particular version of vBulletin (5.4.5) came out roughly a month ago. We were previously on vBulletin 4.2.1, a release that initially came out in mid-2013. This equates to roughly 5-6 yea...
