A deep-dive into the next Call of Duty, plus some beta weekends to add to your schedules.

To close out the Call of Duty League Championship Weekend, Activision announced an event that they are calling Call of Duty: Next. Next is not a new game in the franchise but rather a special event where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward will share tons of new details about this year's game.

Call of Duty: Next will be held on September 15. This event will lead into the first beta weekend for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Next will include a full multiplayer reveal for Modern Warfare 2. Also shown at the event will be new details on Call of Duty: Warzone, a bit about the single player campaign for Modern Warfare 2, and details on the mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone. There's also going to be "a multitude of your favorite streamers at the event, playing the games in real time." ... Yay?

The beta phases for Modern Warfare 2 are as follow:
  • Weekend One (PlayStation exclusive)
    • Early access - September 16-17
    • Open beta - September 18-20
  • Weekend Two (Crossplay beta)
    • Early access (Xbox & PC) and open beta (PlayStation) - September 22-23
    • Open beta (all platforms) - September 24-26
The "early access" phases mentioned above will be for those that pre-ordered the game on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via either Battle.net or Steam. The open beta for both weekends will be open to everyone (on the platforms indicated) and will feature crossplay and cross-party support across all platforms.

The Modern Warfare 2 beta will "feature a robust multiplayer experience going beyond the core 6v6 experience." Sadly, the specifics of what all will actually be included in the beta was not yet revealed. Presumably, we will see what all is included during the Call of Duty: Next event. We do know that those that pre-ordered the Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 2 will get to use a couple of rewards in the beta:
  • All four of the Red Team 141 Operators – Ghost, Farah, Price, and Soap – each wearing a special masked outfit.
  • The FJX Cinder Weapon Vault.
Players that participate in the beta will get to earn some in-game rewards for the full release of the game when it's out on October 28, 2022.

Infinity Ward will also release a "series of intel drops" through Twitter, the Call of Duty blog, and the Infinity Ward blog. These will be some behind-the-scenes look at some of the features that have been created or refined for Modern Warfare 2.

When they announced the Call of Duty: Next event, Activision and Infinite Ward also showed off a look at the Marina Bay Grand Prix multiplayer map. This is a map where the main combat takes place on an urban race circuit and will be one of the maps included in the upcoming beta. You can get a look at that map in the video seen below.

Finally, a look at the pre-order and special edition versions of the game was also shared by Activision.
