In space, nobody can hear your choices.

Supermassive Games, the studio behind horror adventures such as Until Dawn and The Quarry, just released Directive 8020 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. This latest is a cinematic sci-fi survival horror adventure. It's also the latest in The Dark Pictures series, despite not carrying the name.

The Earth is dying. It's also dying in Directive 8020, which is why a ship was sent out 12 light-years from home to Tau Ceti f in hopes of finding a new place for humanity to live. Things start to go a little south when the colony ship, Cassiopeia, crash lands on the planet and the crew starts to get picked off one by one by an alien organism.

Like The Thing, this alien organism is capable of mimicking its prey. Of course, given that this is a game from Supermassive, you can expect to go through several quick-time events, scares, twists, and probably more than a few deaths of main characters.

Hunted by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey, the crew of the Cassiopeia must outwit their pursuers to make it home alive. As they battle to survive, they are confronted with the hardest choice of all: to save themselves, they must risk the lives of everyone on Earth.

In space, death takes many forms.

A bold first for Supermassive Games, this “The Thing… in space” sci-fi survival horror journey evolves The Dark Pictures formula with real-time threats, survival gameplay and enhanced tools like Turning Points. Players must navigate impossible moral dilemmas amid rising paranoia, where no one on the crew can be trusted and every choice matters, shaping the fate of the crew at every turn. Choose wisely, as all characters can live and all can die. And what of The Curator? Well, you’ll just have to play to find out!

Starring Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die, Bob Marley: One Love, The Woman King) as pilot Brianna Young, Directive 8020 delivers a gripping cinematic experience that can be played solo or shared with up to five players in couch co-op movie night mode (with online multiplayer coming in a post-launch update).

    Directive 8020 includes several stand-out gameplay-enhancing features:
    • TRUST NO ONE: Encounter an alien lifeform that perfectly imitates its prey. Years of training and trust are lost among the crew when their enemy hides in plain sight. Who is human and who is not? Your choices are now more important than ever!
    • REWIND DECISIONS: Rewrite your destiny and change the course of your story with our new Turning Points story tree. Uncover multiple endings, unlock hidden paths, and save your crew from their fateful deaths.
    • REAL-TIME ALIEN THREATS: Evade a deadly alien threat that roams the dark corridors of the ship, intent on eradicating human life. Overcome your enemies using improvised weapons, lightning reflexes, and stealth.
    • DON’T PLAY ALONE: Recruit up to five players to join the mission in couch co-op movie night mode. Choose which crew members to control and work together with your friends to survive alien infiltrators, deadly dilemmas, and catastrophic system failures (with online multiplayer coming in a post-launch update).
“With Directive 8020, we’ve taken our signature horror narrative and everything we love about cinematic storytelling, pushing it all into new territory,” said Will Doyle, Creative Director at Supermassive Games. “We’re incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished, and bringing our storytelling into a sci-fi setting for the first time has been a hugely exciting step. The team has worked hard to refine every part of the experience, so we can’t wait for players to finally get their hands on it.”
