Microsoft just stated that Copilot for consoles is no longer a thing. A social media post by Xbox's new CEO Asha Sharma, says that development of Copilot has come to an end. Furthermore, Sharma also says that Microsoft is also "winding down Copilot on mobile."
Copilot was originally announced to be in development for Xbox only back in March 2025. It took all of two months for that initiative to come to a screeching halt.
Of course, those people working on AI within Microsoft will need to work on something. Right? Yeah, of course they do. According to reporting by The Verge, several leadership changes are coming to Xbox. Multiple CoreAI members, former co-workers with Sharma before she took over Xbox, are moving over to lead various divisions within Xbox.
The Verge says that most of the leadership changes are being made to platform teams that worked under former Xbox president Sarah Bond. Those leaving include Roanne Sones (corporate VP of Xbox devices and ecosystem) and Kevin Gammill (corporate VP of Xbox user experience). Jason Ronald (VP of next gen) is getting promoted.
“On hardware, we are elevating Jason Ronald, accountable for Project Helix, and our platform,” says Sharma. It’s not clear what Ronald’s new title is, though. Jason Beaumont “will lead the product and serve as interim head of engineering,” as part of these changes.
- Jared Palmer (former CoreAI) enters as VP of Engineering and Technical Advisor to Sharma
- Tim Allen (former CoreAI VP of design) now lead design at Xbox
- Jonathan McKay (former CoreAI head of growth) will lead Xbox for growth, data platform, and analytics
- Evan Chaki (former general manager for CoreAI) will join a new team in Xbox to "lead a forward-deployed engineering group focused on removing repetitive work, simplifying development, and improving how we operate."
