During today's new Nintendo Direct dedicated to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, we were treated to a new trailer for the film as well as announcements for several new cast members. Some of those announcements include Donald Glover (aka: Childish Gambino) taking on the role of Yoshi, Luis Guzmán as Wart, and Issa Rae as Honey Hive Galaxy's Honey Queen.
Donald Glover is an actor, comedian, musician, and filmmaker. Glover worked on televisions shows such as 30 Rock as an actor and writer and was one of the stars on Community. Glover has appeared in several films and shows throughout his career.
Glover has been nominated for and won numerous awards throughout his career. He has been nominated for and won several Emmys, Critics Choice, MTV Video Music Awards, BET Awards, and Golden Globes. Under his stage name of Childish Gambino, Glover won Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Music Video, and Best Rap/Sung Performance for 2018's This is America.
In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Glover will play a green dinosaur named Yoshi. Yoshi is Mario's most common sidekick and has appeared across numerous games since his debut in 1990's Super Mario World.
Glover will be joined by Luis Guzmán as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen. Guzmán recently played Gomez Addams in the Wednesday television series. Guzmán has several additional acting roles under his belt including roles in Punch-Drunk Love, Traffic, and Boogie Nights. He also has several producer and writing credits to his name. Those of you who play games may recognize Guzmán's as the voice of Ricardo Díaz from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Guzmán has won awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Cast.
Issa Rae is an actress, writer, producer, and comedian. She started her rise to stardom in a YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl. Rae may be best known for her writing, acting, and producer work on the HBO series called Insecure. Throughout her career, Rae has been nominated for and won several different awards including wins in several Best Actress categories.
These three will be joining returning characters from the first film as well as other newcomers such as Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), Rosalina (Brie Larson), and one mystery character that has yet to be revealed but many seem to believe is Fox McCloud from the long-forgotten Star Fox series.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 1, 2026.
