Clear River Games announced that the shoot 'em up (shmup) of your childhood is now available on PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, and PC. R-Type Delta HD Boosted takes everything you love from the original and brings it up to modern day standards.
Clear River worked alongside the original developers at Irem Software Engineering to update the original R-Type Delta from 1998. This release features updated HD visuals, a new opening movie, a remixed soundtrack, and a "variety" of quality-of-life features and improvements.
R-Type Delta HD Boosted runs at a smooth 60 FPS and includes a toggle that allows you to quickly switch between the original graphics and the new HD visuals. The soundtrack has newly arranged compositions from Masahiko Ishida (R-Type 2), USP (R-Type Delta), and Chris Hülsbeck (R-Type for Commodore 64 and Aimga). Players also have the option to adjust screen size, choose between difficulty settings, and access a new practice mode before taking on the Bydo Empire in real combat.
Setting the tone for those brushing up on their R-Type mythology: In the year 2163, having triumphed over the Bydo Empire, the R9 has been recovered and safely stored within a space fortress orbiting Earth. Humanity can’t catch a break however, as in 2164 chaos reigns supreme when unidentified objects fall from the sky, electronic weapons systems malfunction, and an ‘annihilation unit’ stored alongside the R9 suddenly goes berserk, descending to Earth and beginning a wave of destruction. Quite the dilemma for sure, and one which results in the ‘R9 Delta’ prototype test unit being deployed, marking the beginning of a new battle against the nefarious Bydo.
