Epic Games has sparked a major community debate with its new Fortnite limited-time mode (LTM), "Delulu." The new mode, which controversially introduced open proximity voice chat, has led to what Epic confirms are "thousands" of player bans for toxic behavior just this past weekend.
This has left the community asking whether the mode was a reckless experiment or a smart trap to weed out toxic players.
What is Fortnite's 'Delulu' LTM?
The Delulu mode is a new battle royale variant with a social-deception twist. It changes the core Fortnite formula by heavily relying on in-game alliances and betrayals.Key mechanics include:
- Proximity Voice Chat: This is the mode's core feature. For the first time in a standard Fortnite mode, all nearby players (enemies and allies alike) can speak to each other.
- Dynamic Teaming: Players load in solo but can use the proximity chat to find and team up with other players, forming squads on the fly.
- Betrayal Mechanic: These alliances are fragile. Players are encouraged to betray their new teammates at any time to gain an advantage.
- Last Player Standing: The objective remains the same as the classic battle royale: be the last person alive, whether through teamwork or backstabbing.
Proximity Chat Leads to Widespread Toxicity
As many seasoned gamers predicted, the introduction of open, unregulated proximity chat led to an immediate and significant increase in toxic behavior. Players across social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit began reporting an onslaught of toxicity. One user stated that it was a "toxic hellzone" while another said they were "called the hard R by a 10yr old."These reports included numerous instances of other players using blatant racist and sexist slurs, making personal threats, and engaging in other forms of severe verbal abuse.
Epic Games' Response: The Banwave
Epic Games was apparently monitoring the situation closely, either through live moderation or by acting swiftly on the influx of player reports. Over the weekend, the company confirmed it had issued "thousands" of bans specifically related to voice chat violations in the Delulu mode. This quick and large-scale banwave has led to intense community speculation about Epic's motives.
The "Delulu" name now seems fitting for the controversy itself. Some in the community speculate this was a deliberate trap by Epic Games. That is, Epic used this mode as a way to weed out the most toxic Fortnite players by giving them a tool (proximity chat) they would inevitably abuse.
However, critics of this theory argue that if this was a trap, it was a reckless and poorly-conceived one. This method knowingly subjected thousands of players, including minors, to severe verbal abuse. Many feel Epic Games should have implemented much stricter automated chat filtering or moderation before launching a feature that is infamous for exposing toxicity in other online games.
The first round of Delulu came to an end at 9 a.m. on September 22nd. The Delulu LTM is expected to return on September 26th and finish on September 29th. After ending on the 29th there will be no more Delulu for the foreseeable future.
