It's time once again to play the blame game. This time, it's none other than Build a Rock Boy's CEO Leslie Benzies blaming "internal and external saboteurs" for the myriad of struggles that have plagued MindsEye.
First, something that is a bit more important: All of Build a Rocket Boy's ~300 employees were sent an at-risk of redundancy email. At-risk emails were also sent to the staff of PlayFusion, a studio that Build a Rocket Boy acquired in late 2024.
In June 2025, Build a Rocket Boy began a redundancy process shortly after MindsEye released. According to reporting from IGN, a standard 45-day consultation process began on June 23. This is the standard and legally required amount of time set by UK law when an employer is about to layoff 100 or more "redundancies" over a period of 90 days. Build a Rocket Boy has 300 developers working within the UK and another 200 or so employees elsewhere.
According to IGN's sources, Build a Rocket Boy's CEO Leslie Benzies finally addressed the staff. Benzies reported held a brief video call yesterday with employees on July 2nd. According to "two people present who asked not to be named," Benzies stated that the studio would bounce back. Furthermore, Benzies has plans to relaunch MindsEye.
In the same video call, Benzies went on to at least partially blame the struggles of both the studio and the game on "internal and external saboteurs."
If that sounds familiar to you, you could be thinking of statements issued by Build a Rocket Boy's co-CEO Mark Gerhard ahead of the game's release. In the lead up to MindsEye's release, Gerhard said that there was a "concerted effort" to "trash the game and the studio." He seemed to suggest that people, including journalists, were being paid to post negative remarks about MindsEye. He also suggested, without directly stating, that it was Rockstar Games that was paying for those negative comments.
As someone that played through MindsEye on my own and even reviewed it, I can safely say that there is no conspiracy. MindsEye just sucks shit.
