  • Trump's Tariffs Result in Switch 2 Pre-order Delay in U.S.

    Gamers make surprised Pikachu face.
The Nintendo Switch 2 with the main unit sitting in the Switch 2 dock and the Joy-Con 2 controllers connected to a controller shell in front.

Nintendo says that they will not open up pre-orders on April 9 for those living in the United States. The new Nintendo game console will still go up for pre-orders, as originally scheduled, on the 9th for other regions outside the United States. Nintendo says that they need to "assess the potential impact of tariffs" before they decide to open pre-orders in the U.S.

Despite the delay in pre-orders for the States, Nintendo says that the June 5 launch for the Switch 2 remains unchanged. The statement by Nintendo was issued on Friday, June 4.

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date.
On the same day that Nintendo fully revealed the Switch 2, Trump announced a 24% tariff on Japanese imports. Nintendo hardware is also manufactured in countries such as China and Vietnam, which were hit with tariffs of 54% and 46% respectively.

Actual enforcement of these tariffs remains uncertain. If enforced, analysts predict that the tariffs could raise the price of the Switch 2 from the planned $450 to upwards of $600, $700, or more in the United States.

Many gamers were absolutely shocked to learn that gaming is political when word of the tariffs and potential Switch 2 price increase were shared over the weekend. Hopeful Switch 2 owners voiced their anger and disappointment across social media sites and Reddit.

Now it'll cost a billion dollars, thanks orange man
Say thank you to the worst president of US history.
If you're a U.S. gamer and you voted for Trump (or didn’t vote at all), this Switch 2 mess is 100% on you
The phrase "I never thought leopards would eat my face" seems applicable here for those gamers that voted for Trump, or who chose not to vote at all in the presidential election.
