Legendary Entertainment is going to take a stab at making a live-action Street Fighter movie. This is according to an exclusive report from IGN.

IGN notes that Legendary Entertainment is the current rights holder for the live-action film and television adaptations for all things Street Fighter. Legendary says that all projects from them will be developed with Capcom. Though this was all revealed today, there are absolutely no details to be had about the upcoming film.

To their credit, this live-action Street Fighter film is not the first time they have adapted a game into a movie. Legendary is the production company that brought both Warcraft and Pokémon Detective Pikachu to the world. Detective Pikachu didn't make massive waves with critics at release, but most fans seemed to enjoy it with an average 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Legendary has also been the production company behind films such as Dune, 300, the Jurassic World films, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, Watchmen, and more.

As far as live-action film adaptations of Street Fighter are concerned, the results have been less than stellar. In 1994 there was the infamous live-action film with Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film was universally panned by critics and fans alike, earning just a 11% average score. It was also the final film that Raul Julia appeared in before his unfortunate passing. In 2009 there was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Kristin Kreuk. This film somehow reviewed worse than the Van Damme film, coming in at just a 3% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Several other Street Fighter adaptations have been released over the years that have faired marginally better than the live-action films. These include some animated films and even a short-lived television show in the late 90s.

On the gaming side, the franchise continues to be extremely popular with fans. Street Fighter 6 is currently in development and is expected to be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in June.
