In September 2016, a unique and stylized game for the PlayStation 4 was released. It was called The Tomorrow Children, it offered both a paid and free-to-play option, and it had a very short life. The game lasted just 13 months before the servers were turned off in November 2017. Five years later, it looks like The Tomorrow Children is ready to return.

Q-Games has acquired the rights from publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment. This returns the IP for The Tomorrow Children back to original creator Dylan Cuthbert and his team. Cuthbert was pushed to negotiate with Sony over the rights after a small but dedicated group of fans persuaded him to do so.

“I’d like to thank first and foremost the fans of The Tomorrow Children, without whom I would never have had the confidence to keep pursuing this deal. Our fans are some of the most amazing gamers out there, and every day for the past four years they have kept the dream alive. I think the happiest thing about this decision is imagining the enjoyment those fans will feel as they re-enter the crazy post-apocalyptic neo-soviet world of The Tomorrow Children.

“Secondly I’d like to thank Sony Interactive Entertainment for also working with me to have the IP returned to Q-Games. It has taken a concerted effort by all of us to get to this ultimate step, and I’m full of gratitude to everyone involved in the process.”
The Tomorrow Children was an online-only multiplayer game where groups of people harvested resources, built up small towns, and defended their world from attackers. The whole game had this weird Soviet post-apocalyptic theme going on. The game also made use of some pretty advanced graphical features for its time, including voxel cone tracing to create real-time global illumination and terrain deformation.

Cuthbert did not say exactly how the game would be returning. He did say that he is currently "tweaking and re-working parts of the game every week." Cuthbert notes that behind-the-scenes updates and development progress will be shared via a newsletter.

The screens you see below are from the original release of the game.
