Rebellion says that their quasi-open world survival-action title, Atomfall, was "immediately profitable" for the studio. This is in spite of the fact that the game saw a significant chunk of its 2 million players come via Xbox Game Pass.
Released on March 27th, Rebellion did not share just how many people purchased the game across all platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, and PC). However, they reveal that it has been their biggest ever launch in terms of player count. That aforementioned "2 million player" figure mentioned above came in early April, just two weeks after launch, suggesting that the count could be much higher now.
Rebellion says that the development costs for Atomfall were recouped almost immediately after the game was released. The game performed so well for them that they are already discussing potential plans for either a full sequel or a spin-off. These sequel discussions are happening while Rebellion continues to work on post-launch support and DLC for Atomfall.
Atomfall's success was discussed as part of a larger discussion with The Game Business.
Just last month, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley praised Game Pass. He notes that with the game on Game Pass, "you can get people to try it" and if those people like it "they then tell their mates on social media."
