A special limited-time competition is now live in World of Warcraft. Blizzard calls it Plunderstorm. I also call it Plunderstorm because that's what its name is. This is a "competition of wits, prowess, and survival."
Plunderstorm was originally introduced to Warcraft players back in Dragonflight. This is Warcraft's take on the battle royale genre. Each match takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and includes 60 players per match. The winner is the last player to remain standing at the end. During a match, you level up and gain new abilities by killing creatures, killing other players, looting chests, and avoiding death to the encroaching storm.
With its return this week, Blizzard has made several quality-of-life improvements from its first go around. They also added in new spells and made a few balance changes to some of the older spells that were around the first time.
There are a bunch of rewards that can be earned by playing. You can pick up new mounts, pets, and various pirate-themed cosmetics. I'm personally a fan of the little owl (seen above) wearing a pirate outfit, named Pirate Pepe. You do not need to win a match in order to earn the currency to acquire these items.
The highlights of those quality-of-life improvements include:
- Improved Queuing: access to this game mode remains the same as before but will now also include a user interface access option from The War Within UI in game.
- Plunderstore: progress for rewards is no longer tied to linear renown track completion and instead players will earn currency (Plunder) to purchase the rewards of their choosing from a dedicated user interface available in-game and from the queue screen.
- Ability updates: new abilities and balance updates to current ones.
- Rewards: Previous Plunderstorm rewards will be available and joined by new transmog sets, a new parrot mount, a new pet and more.
