Terms Used in Spades

Deal

The deal is a process where the dealer in the game gives cards to every player in the game. Often, a round in the game is also known as a deal. When playing cards in your hands, you are playing a deal.

Bid

Once the dealer distributes cards, each player proposes the number of tricks they expect to win. The proposal is called a bid.

If the players are playing in partnership, discussing the bids with the partner is not allowed. So, each player bids, and then the bids of two players of the same team are added together.

Lead

The player sitting on the left side of the dealer is the lead. When a round begins, that player takes the lead to put the card first and set a suit.

Suit

A suit is a sign made on the playing cards. The four suits of cards are Hearts, Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds.

Trick

The set of cards that all the players play in a single round is called a trick.

Bag

If a player wins a trick above what they bid, it's called a bag. For instance, if a player bids for three tricks but wins four tricks, the extra trick is called a bag.

Trump

In a game, any card or suit that is privileged with the highest-ranking or greater power is the trump. In the case of the Spades game, the suit, Spades, is trump.

Turn

When one rotational round is completed on the table, it's called a turn. To complete a turn in Spades, each player plays a card.

Dealing

Each player chooses a dealer in the Spades card game by randomly drawing a card from the deck. This way, the player with the highest card becomes the dealer. After the first dealer is selected, they get the chance to deal cards in a clockwise direction.

It's the dealer's job to distribute the entire deck, starting from their left. Players get one card at a time.

Bidding

Once each player gets the card, they must arrange cards according to the suits. After analyzing the suits, players bid tricks that they can win.

The bidding process starts with the person sitting to the dealer's left. Then in the clockwise direction, each player tells their bidding. As per the rule, every player must place at least one bid.

If players are playing in a team, they have to bid separately. After that, the bids of each player of a team are combined. Another thing to keep in mind is that while bidding, none of the players have to say a trump as Spades is always the trump.

Certain types of Spades partnership games allow players to take a bid from 0 to 13. If a player does not bid any trick, it's known as bidding nil. Whereas, if a player chooses to bid without seeing the dealt cards, it's called bidding blind.

Bidding Nil

Bidding nil is a situation where a player decides to move forward in the game with zero bids. It means the player won't win any trick during the round.

An important thing to note about this bidding type is that if that player successfully wins zero tricks, the partner gets 100 bonus points. But if that player even wins a single bid, the partner receives a penalty of 100 points.

When playing in partnership, if one player bids nil and the other player proposes a number, the partner must win the proposed number of tricks. Similarly, if both the players bid nil and successfully win zero tricks, they get 200 points. But even if one player wins a single trick, the partner gets 0 points.

Bidding Blind

Another interesting Spades bidding is bidding blind. To bid blind, a player must propose tricks that they can win. After that, they see the cards and exchange three cards with their partner.

If both players play successfully and win the blind bid, they get 200 points. But if they lose, they receive a penalty of 200 points.

If both the players decide to bid blind, they don't exchange the cards. If the partners successfully win the bid, they get 400 points for the partnership. But if they fail, they receive 400 points as a penalty. By the same token, if one of the partners fails, they receive 0 points.

The Gameplay

Once every player has bid, the player sitting on the dealer's left starts the round. The other players then follow suit in a clockwise direction.

At any point in the game, if one of the players fails to follow the lead, they can play a trump or any random card. A person who puts the highest card of the current suit or the highest trump wins the trick. The best part about Spades is that it can be found via online video poker gambling in uae.
