Today, Cloud Imperium Games announced that they are partnering with Firesprite for the upcoming multiplayer mode in Star Citizen. The mode, called Theaters of War (working title), is a PvP experience that was first unveiled back during CitizenCon 2019. This mode features large-scale, team-based battles between attackers and defenders. The battles will take place on the surface of planets, in the upper atmosphere, and then feature a final assault on a space station.

You can probably think of this mode as something akin to a Battlefield style game type or even Star Wars Battlefront 2's Supremacy and Galactic Assault modes.

This collaboration between the two studios apparently began back in 2019. Since then, the two studios have collaborated to design and build this multiplayer experience. Allegedly, some of the things learned by Firesprite have been implemented into other areas of Star Citizen including the base game and the also unreleased Squadron 42 single-player campaign.

Though the mode was first demoed in 2019, very few players have actually gotten to try it out yet. There is a small group that has been playing it for a little while now. A more public test will be coming "eventually" according to Cloud Imperium Games.
