Crucible, the latest entry into the competitive team-based FPS genre is out now from Amazon Games and developer Relentless Studios. You can play it right now for free. Simply head on over to the Crucible Steam Store page and download it to get started.
In Crucible, players team up with others to take out their opponents while also doing battle against a number of hostile creatures. All of this is being done to try and earn a valuable resource called Essence. This Essence can be used to beef up the special powers that the characters possess.
As part of today's launch, players will have access to three different game modes. These include Heart of the Hives, Harvester Command, and Alpha Hunters. There will be 10 hunters available at launch to choose from.
Today's release marks the start of an 8-week Pre-Season event. During this time, players will be able to learn the game, find their favorite hunters, and "begin honing their strategy" ahead of the first actual Season. Everyone that logs into the game prior to June 2 will get a bonus gift of 1,000 Credits added to their in-game account. These Credits can be spent on cosmetic in-game items such as skins and emotes. There is also a Pre-Season Battle Pass that is available for 950 Credits. See, that's how they get ya.
The Pre-Season Pass will give players "a series of challenges and rewards." These include additional customization options on a character level and on an account level. I'm not sure if these Credits can be earned through playing the game or if they are a real-world money option only.
Hopefully the launch trailer does a better job of showing off the game more than mere text possibly could.
Crucible launches with three game modes:
- Heart of the Hives: A 4 vs. 4 battle against giant boss Hives that spawn throughout the world. Each Hive contains a valuable Heart, and the first team to capture three Hearts wins, making each match a dangerous balance between racing the opposing team and surviving the powerful Hives.
- Alpha Hunters: Eight teams of two take the battlefield and fight to be the final team standing.
- Harvester Command: Two eight-person teams battle to capture and hold Harvesters spread across the map, vying for control of the Essence that drew them all to the planet. Teams earn points by controlling Harvesters and defeating opponents, and the first team to 100 points wins.
- Three game modes at launch for a variety of team-based play: Heart of the Hives, Alpha Hunters, and Harvester Command
- Diverse roster of 10 humans, robots, and aliens at launch, each with unique weaponsand abilities
- Fast-paced combat requires players to constantly re-evaluate and adjust strategies
- Collect Essence to level up, increasing your hunter’s power and enhancing their abilities
