Quake II RTX Dated for June 6

    What's old is new again.

Nvidia just released the "official announce trailer" today for Quake II RTX, or Quake II with real-time ray tracing for those not in the know. There will be a free release to Windows and Linux users on June 6. Please note that this is not the same as the user created mod called "Q2VKPT."

But what exactly is Quake II RTX? It's the beloved classic FPS, Quake II, with modern, real-time ray tracing technology added to it. This delivers vastly improved lighting and effects work and, in many cases, completely alters the look of...

New 425.31 Nvidia Drivers Bring Ray Tracing to Older GTX Cards

Remember about a month back when we told you that ray tracing was coming to those with non-RTX Nvidia cards? That day has finally arrived. With today's release of the 425.31 drivers, those on 1060 and higher cards can now give real-time ray tracing a spin.

Since all of these older cards lack the special hardware that helps to speed up DirectX Raytracing (DXR) in games, don't expect to have fantastic framerates. However, if you understand what you're getting yourself into, go nuts with it. Just make sure you have one of the following cards, have updated to the 425.31 Nvidia drivers,...

Nvidia Announces Real-time Ray Tracing for Older GTX Cards

Nvidia just announced today that they are bringing real-time ray tracing to their GTX lineup of cards. This support will begin with a driver update currently slated for some time in April.

Get ready to have your framerates destroyed. Think about it this way: Nvidia's RTX cards have special hardware that is dedicated to handling the load of real-time ray tracing. Even with this special hardware, enabling real-time ray tracing still destroys framerates on these new cards.

Now they're going to add support for it on to their older cards? It will certainly make your...

Battlefield V is Now the First Game to Support Ray Tracing

With today's update to the game, Battlefield V is now the first game out there to support DirectX's real-time ray tracing (DXR). If you own an Nvidia 20xx card, you may want to check it out for yourself. Or maybe don't, because the performance hit is, to put it mildly, massive.
So, what is ray tracing? Essentially, an algorithm traces the path of light from many different viewpoints and simulates the way it interacts with 3D objects in the scene. As the ray moves through the scene it accumulates color and light information along the way from all objects it encounters. These interactions are then combined to produce the final color of a pixel, that will be displayed on screen. Tracing from smooth surfaces like windows, ca

NVIDIA RTX 20xx Series Coming in September, RTX 2080 Ti Starts at $1200

As you probably heard by now, if you read some previous news posts here, NVIDIA held their pre-Gamescom 2018 event today. During the event, they announced that their Turing powered lineup of graphics cards will be released starting on September 20.

They're making the jump from the 10xx line straight up to 20xx cards, beginning with the $499 (USD) RTX 2070. The GeForce RTX 2080 will go for $799. The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti will start at $1,199.

RTX? Yep. Nvidia is also re-branding from "GTX" to "RTX" to emphasize their RTX branding for real-time ray tracing technology. Here are some additional details on what games will support DirectX Raytracing (DXR) along with the Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS), which is essentially yet another form of AA for games.

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider to Utilize Real-Time Ray Tracing Technology from Nvidia

Shadow of the Tomb Raider joins the ever growing list of games that will make use of Nvidia's real-time ray tracing. This was announced a short time ago today during Nvidia's event at a pre-Gamescom event.

A real-time demo of Shadow of the Tomb Raider running with the real-time ray tracing tech will be shown this week during Gamescom 2018 behind closed doors. However, you can also watch this new technology trailer that was released to the public today to get a sample of what it looks like.

The trailer features a look at ray traced shadows and lighting, HDR, tessellation, 4K rendering, and more.

  • Battlefield V Open Beta Begins September 4; New Ray Tracing Features Announced

The open beta for Battlefield V begins on September 4 for those that pre-order the game and on September 6 for everyone else. This open beta will be available to everyone on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

This beta will include the Rotterdam map on Conquest mode and the Arctic Fjord map on Conquest and Grand Operations. DICE and EA showed off some Rotterdam gameplay a few days ago. This is the same footage that they're showing off this week at Gamescom 2018.

In addition to this beta news, it was revealed today that Battlefield V will make use of Nvidia's RTX tech for real-time ray tracing.

Metro Exodus will be First PC Game to Use Real Time Ray Tracing Technology

During a GDC 2018 tech demo of Metro Exodus, developer 4A Games said that it will be the first game to make use of Nvidia's new RTX real-time ray tracing technology.

If it's anything like the demos we've already seen at GDC this week, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high for this being something most people will be able to fully enjoy until years from now.

GDC 2018: Microsoft Announces DirectX Raytracing

Though the adoption of dedicated DirectX 12 games is near non-existent, that hasn't stopped companies like Microsoft from adding in new features and APIs. The latest announcement came today in the form of a new API dedicated to facilitating the creation of real-time ray tracing.

This is a fairly simplified explanation from Wikipedia.
Optical ray tracing describes a method for producing visual images constructed in 3D computer graphics environments, with more photorealism than either ray casting or scanline rendering techniques. It works by tracing a path from an imaginary eye through each pixel in a virtual screen, and calculating the color of the object visible through it. Scenes in ray tracing are described mathematica
