Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code

      1) Players with no interest in tactical play stick around. They will also bounce around into PROS servers, upsetting the tactical play taking place there.
If you want "Tactical" players only (whatever that is), then they should be the ones running the passworded server...

      2) Players looking for tactical play (such as Colfax) will find a SSM server and be put off by the gameplay there. I for one never really read the server message, nor do I pay attention to the text at the top of the screen. I think many others are the same way.
Well that may have been the case with colfax, and if it was, thats a shame. I dont know if it clearly stated that it was a modded server or not. If it clearly said modded, then its his fault for not reading it. I think servers are doing whats reasonable usually, to point out they are modded. And asking them to state they are modded is reasonable, asking them to password their server, (knowing they will get no players ever at all) is unreasonable. And thats what this is about, disallowing anyone from playing the modded version.

      3) Players who would like tactical play, but don't know it yet (such as myself 1 year ago) will never be thrown into that sink or swim situation that results in them finding the joys of tactical play.
What about the players (myself included) that have a different idea of what "tactical" is.. We alraedy know we dont want what PR is selling, so why should it be near impossible for these players to find a server.

Thats the effect that passwording a server will have, it wont even be in peoples browsers, and you guys know it!

TBH there is a huge number of players looking for just this modded game, reasonable spawn times and realistic weapons.

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code

I feel we all have to respect the overall intentions of the PR dev team. It's up to them to do what they want with their PR mod code. I guess if they could hard code so the server was not moddable (prevent SSM) that would solve a lot of controversy. (Excuse my ignorance, I know nothing about coding or modding BF2..) I guess it's not possible to prevent in code hence the drastic reason for PR to attempt and license the "pure and true PR server" on next revision of the PR mod.
But what does that mean in practice? So I'm 18y old, I apply and I'm granted a "license" to install and run a "pure PR server".. Then on request or own intrest I change the spawn time on my "pure PR server". Ok, now I am in violation of the PR dev teams license agreement which I have signed.. Now what, can some one answer what is next step?
I think the PR team is gonna have a long long battle trying to protect their intentions that all players stay true and pure with their BF2-mod. I think they will loose that battle in any case.. So why fight PR SSM to start off with?

@ eggman, my comments are my own unless I expressly state that it is representative of the POE team. Some of us agree with you, some do not.

we are then lingually entitled to shut down that server if its running our mod, with SSMs :)

EDIT: lol drunkey, where did I say things? :p

How exactly are you going to enforce that if they pay for the server and not you?

                that part is a secret

(unless another mod team needs to know for w/e reason, then we would hand over the info to them of course)

That sounds dangerous, there are legalities involved in attacking another computer.

Im getting the impression that they have made the goal as complicated as possible to achieve and managed to make it detrimental to themselves.
                    A bizarre achievement.

lol, you can guess all you like but we aint uploading any viruses to servers to take them offline or anything e legal... all perfectly above board and within our power.

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code

                        Well you have 2 options;

do something to attack the software and shut it down

                        or

some kind of legal challenge in a coart over copyright infringement (however as long as they are saying they are not pure PR, this wont fly)

Also it comes down to money in coart and since all of this is free and no one is making a dime, you cant claim loses(players dont count in coart).

And some guy will be motivated to find the PR server backdoor or "update service" running on your server install and block it or prevent it from connecting and reporting actual config to your online "PR license checking service".. And this guy will manage and you will shortly have x amount of "pure and true PR licensed server" running SSM.. again.. And it will be a struggle all the way into eternity..

Also, I'm a bit upset at how some of the PR team and promoters categorically say that SSM is for the bad.. In their words SSM only has a negative meaning. I'd try not to be so prejudice and leave a door open for the fact that SSM could also be for the good and benefit of all.

About the whole "PR server license" I say; good intentions but bad implementation and poor announcement.

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code

I know ive been on the attack here, but this is why

Its totally obvious they want to shut out the modded version for their own reasons. Basically saying "if you wont play this, you cant play it at all; And we dont even want there to be a choice."

Thing is, there's lots of people (like me) looking for exactly that game,(the modded version=faster play, with realistic weapons).
They are afraid more people will play the modded version than the pure...

So i find it rather selfish they would stop people like us from having our own game they way we like it. Especially since there is no other alternative to play. Please point me to this game, and ill play it. Otherwise why cant there be a modded version for us?

This claim that its stealing players, i dont agree with either. There just isnt that many people looking for that level of slowness..And they need to come to grips with that..People that are looking for the pure version of play, will find it... You should make it obvious there are 2 versions, so people know. This could have been positive, instead its totally negative.

The people that will adapt to pure, will,.. those that wont, wont.

All in all, this goes against the whole spirit of modding, there are all different groups, that like all different play styles. Thats why modding is there,.. to supply everyone with their niche'

And this modded version is a niche' not filled anywhere else.
