Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
Ok, this argument reallty is going no-where to be honest.
So lets break it down into easy digestable chunks (this is where teaching skills come in useful i hope... :hmm: )
1) project reality is a modification made by around 15 people who spend alot of time and energy in a mod. the goal of this mod is to make a sort of realistic representation of war.
2) We do not personally enjoy the VBF2 type gameplay. I enjoy the odd kick about, but our goal was to create something different (in our opinions).
3) Recently, a clan stated that they wanted to mod the modification for thier own purposes server side, so they can make it suit thier needs. in this case, it was create very low spawn times, basically remove the requestable kits and have 20 snipers per map etc etc. This goes against everything we worked for, and were a little bit peeved off. (Think of a shopkeeper who sells coca-cola. if he sells the same product, but draws a giant c*ck over every can, just because he thinks its cooler, coca cola wouldnt want him to do that, as it gives thier company a bad image (its an extreme case, but it gets the point across well.) most of the players enjoy the mod due to the great sense of teamwork, if you have elements of gameplay that we tried to remove placed back into the mod, new players get a poor picture of the mod, and it promotes the type of gameplay we and the community dont like in our servers.
4)We asked politely and quietly on thier forums if they could not modify thier server whilst hosting the mod. thier reply was basically lots of V sign flicking, swearing, and putting us down. they wound us up, and we retaliated because we felt a little bit hacked off
5)We then decided that the only way the servers could be stopped from modifying our mod would be to only release to people who we felt would uphold the ethos of the mod. And this is where we are at.
Hopefully we can all see where we are coming from. We really didnt want to do this, but if you look at it, there is no other way we could protect our mods gameplay.
Had someone approached us, sayign they would like to make an external mini-mod of our mod, we would probably have happily discussed terms (much like DC-xtended and DC, or Allied intent and Allied Extended.) but no-one thought of that.
looking through most of these posts, its just arguing over the same point over and over again, and isnt achieving too much. hopefully, people will have a clearer picture before posting. Any disagreements, then feel free to PM. i am more than happy to talk about it, and im sure the other devs are in the same position to.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
first off, thats going to offend people of a differing view. its very elitistand it promotes the type of gameplay we and the community dont like in our servers.
second: theres a problem with the "our servers" part
Everyone appreciates what you've made, and the quality of your work. We also understand pure PR, its not for everyone. Also the modded version could have been a good learning ground for new vanilla bf2 players. For those having trouble, and need a halfway zone to get use to more dangerous play. Or for those like me, just not looking for that gameplay.
Instead you have come off elitist, with a play it our way, or piss off, your unworthy and we dont want your kind around... great PR job
TBH , it should be totally obvious that someone would fill this niche', this modded version, because no one else is filling it. So it stand to reason someone would mod something for themselves, since on one else seems to want to do it.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
talk about a rock in a hard place...lol
.
with any mod or game its hard to please everyone, damn hard!
if your focus audience is the hardcore tactical gamer then make the mod for them,if pub players dont like the spawn times tell them to make their own frigin mod from scratch, then they will find out how much work goes into a mod and how pissed off they would be if others altered their mod without concent.
.
the spawn time seems to be one of the biggest issues, the pub players hate it but the target audience likes it....its a hard choice to make when there are more pub players than tactical gamers playing pr.
.
extreme measures for an extreme problem,i think you have dealt with this problem in a wise and mature way,i just hope it doesnt ruin the PR fanbase.
.
server owners and noob modders should show mod devs the respect they deserve for all their hard work, respect us by not altering or stealing our assets.,we modders aim for a bigger picture patch by patch then eventually when the product is finished you will understand why some things are done in some ways.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
Let's break this down with the facts.
First off you come to CDU forums accusing us of running a modded PR.06 beta which is false. Given the elitist attitude present in these responses by PR you got the go F*** off attitude because it was solicited.
We stated our honest intention that when .06 came out we intended on modding it. We were honest with you. There are others on the sidelines watching this debate with the same intentions as we.
Then all the flaming back and forth.
I suggested to Egg that exact mini mod idea. Working in cooperation with you. The response was that I must not understand development and why would they do that (not said but implied, "for bottom dwellers like me"). I suggested we think on it to come up with another solution. None has yet been presented.
This forum represents the PR dev peer group. I am not their peer. I don't develop mods. I do SSM. I came here to understand what other devs thought. I found they generally think PR should just ignore the SSM servers. It's your mod, do what you have to. But perhaps you should listen to what is being said here rather than being defensive or condescending.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
Shall we take a step back and look at this from the side; DICE and EA have together developed and published a game series called BattleField.. In question is the version BF2. This version of the game is by design mod friendly to some extent. (Yes, I know it's less than mod friendly) Many enthusiast have taken to modifying the look and feel of vanilla BF2 and even added more functions to the game than the original. Out of these mods there is one mod called Project Reality, a very dedicated and serious mod dev team.
As I understand it, server side modification is a feature introduced in the original game. Is it not up to server owners to set how many players are allowed to join a game, which maps are in rotation, ticket ratio at the start of a round, spawn times.. and so on.. EA/DICE have made the game more or less modifyable, this is by design. Some part of the community have started changing the game parameters on their servers hosting PR. As I see it the server side parameter changes are well within the license agreement and intention of EA/DICE.. or by now it would have been adressed either in a statement or a patch by EA/DICE.
PR dev team, you are trying to get control over something that is out of your control. I believe you should think again with where you are going with the whole "license" issue.
Also don't take it so personal that part of the community is changing some settings on the server when they are hosting your mod. If they enjoy lesser spawn time or running a sniper only server etc. take pride in that they have chosen your modification.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
if u dont like PR , dont play it. dont change it to suite ur needs , make a new mod if u want something different.
and people talking about the effect on the community , i dont think it will do anything , the people who i see as the PR community are people i see on the same servers (igi , russian , TG , TB ect) , in the same squad , i see them on the PR forums regulary , posting sugestions and ways to improve/change PR , these are the PR community and i think this will have NO effect on them , these are the "hardcore" tactical gamers the DEVs speak of.
and all this talk about realism , the DEVs are going for realism with in the limits of the BF2 engine , so enough of all this "PR isnt realistc , no game is realistc blah blah " , of course it isnt , it is a realistc as the bf2 engine will allow.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
er.. no that's not accurate. I just reminded you that we wouldn't support server side modding as of v0.6.
this thread is basically the same people posting over and over again and a few of the folks from Project Reality getting suckered into replying.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
An SSM on a server with MODDED in its name, by definition is its own mini-mod. Atleast in my opinion it is.if u dont like PR , dont play it. dont change it to suite ur needs , make a new mod if u want something different.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
but they have played it , didnt like it so decided to change it for THERE needs, which is ok , for THERE needs , but when new people join the servers and think this is how PR plays then its wrong.Originally posted by lacritstake pride in that they have chosen your modification.
if u dont like PR dont play it. full stop.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
Thats why asking for modded servers to make it plainly obvious, that they arent pure, with MODDED in the Server name, and lots on ingame messages, is reasonable.
Asking them to (by there own admission) make it impossible for any public player to find these other servers. By demanding they password their server, so no one can find it, is unreasonable.
I fully understand that they dont want new players fooled by modded servers. Asking servers to clearly say they are modded is how they should have dealt with this.Comment

Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code
So then why not post an "official PR server list" on the PR home page and advertise this as "updated news" on sites like this one? Here the PR dev team can keep an updated list of which servers are recomended to present the true to the gameplay intentions of the PR mod. This way nobody gets stepped on or offended and every player to their own can choose the way they want to play the mod.
The PR dev team should lower their pride a notch or two.. They did not invent the game BF2.. But, they did create a damn nice new modification out of the original BF2! I honour and respect them for that.Comment
