Re: Project Reality New Procedure For Server Code

I'd first like to say that NO mod is made just to be popular. If mods only get 5% of the players BF2 gets, who the hell would want to spend years of time making a mod, simply trying to attract loads of players? ALL mods have a target audience. Some target audiences are more narrow than others. With PR, they want 'Hardcore-realism' players. Nothing too different than that. Other mods such as DCon also have a key target audience (with DCon's being those who enjoyed the more skillful gameplay of DC). However they aren't completely opposed to gamers of other types.

Every mod wants the bulk of its player-base to be like those who the mod was designed for.

With PR, since there audience is rather narrrow, they have had to take measures to prevent the bulk of players playing a mod in the way it was not intended to be played.

Heavily server-side modded maps (especially those that change the fundamental aspects of gameplay) don't really make sense to me. If you want to change the gameplay of the original mod that much then why are you running a server for that particular mod in the first place? Surely the best idea is to server-side mod a mod that is closer to the type of gameplay you want. If that mod doesn't exist then create a new one.

I also agree that this whole thing is the right idea, wrong execution. Instead of arguing back and forth why don't people put their heads together and try to come up with a separate server filter or different gamemode for SSM's that defaults to OFF. That way when new players join they'll only see the servers that run PR the way it was "meant to be played". Yet those who like the key aspects of PR, but want to change a few things to their liking, can still run ssm's. Then players looking for modded servers can find them. Players looking for pure servers can find them. And more often than not, new players will visit the "pure" servers. Everyone would be more or less happy.

Thats just it , this is the closest mod.. All they say they've changed is spawn times. Not exactly a huge SSM.. Its still basically PR, but without the frustrating waiting. I dont have 5 hrs to play one round, but i do want the other aspects of realism PR offers.

IMO when you have a large difference in spawn times they make a huge difference to gameplay. As has already been brought up in this thread, the longer you have to wait, the more you care about losing your 'life'. It's just like domination gamemode in DCon. In that you don't even respawn but I will bet you anything people are a lot more careful in it.

So in most mods changing the spawntime wouldn't have a huge impact. However for PR it will probably have a much greater effect.

I just don't get why people are complaining about PR's stance? As if this is the only game in existence and all of you had some stake in creating it. You didn't. You either physically want to play the mod or you don't. You download it, play it and make a decision about whether you WANT to keep on playing it.
What's with 12 pages of pointless rhetoric? Just don't play the bloody thing! Or play it! FFS just choose one or the other! Bottom line is : If you're not a dev member, its not your decision on how the mod plays or is released. Spend the next 2 to 3 years of your LIFE making a mod, and THEN you get the right.

If you're whining about these measures then you're not even a fan of the mod in the first place! You're just friggen whining! Do you not see the oxyMORON here?! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Im just fighting for the gameplay style ive been looking for..

All there is out there, is total arcade (bf2) or over the top realism with slowness and long spawn times as its apparent main gameplay feature. Im looking for what this modded server is offering, and apperantly so are lots of others.

I find it very annoying that theres so much resistance to this gameplay style. And an outright move to deny me what im looking for as a player.

Well in that case then maybe you're barking up the wrong tree here. If total arcade is not for you then don't play BF2. If over the top realism is not for you then don't play PR. If you're looking for something in between and it doesn't exist then start making a brand new mod. If you're looking for something close to PR but not too close, then maybe the PR devs would consider allowing mini-mods?

Apparently not, they are out to kill any thought or kind of other "gameplay". Apparently it hurts the quality of their community....Nothing but password locked servers (that equals doom). I dont have password servers unchecked in my browser filter, do you?

Kyster, you shouldn't presume to think what other people think of a mod just because they want to modify some settings. I am a fan of this mod. I think it's one of the best. I want to tone down some of the settings that are IMO too much, too far, perhaps realistic but not fun. You don't agree with my changes. Then don't play on my server. It's clearly marked. You seem like a really intelligent guy. You can make that decision for yourself, couldn't you?

I think this discussion is important for one reason only. It's the first and only attempt I can see of a mod team attempting to control the player community. It's not about changing settings and running a server differently or applying for a "license". That is just the tool, the mechanism, means to acheiving an end. That end to have complete control of the players of this mod. To be certain they receive the proper indoctrination, eliminate distractions and choices. There is only one way to play.

Their problem is that it's already too late. Past releases were modded and provided gameplay that statistics prove many wanted. Too many, like myself, enjoyed that different style. I'm sure you and others didn't. So now, they are trying to stuff the genie back in the bottle. Honestly, I don't see that happening.

er... first of all non of you are really basing your comments and discussions in anything factual, half the stuff read here purported to be fact is either opinion or simply not accurate.

second of all nobody has any idea what the PR team will deem "acceptable" in terms of server side modding because we haven't made that clear.

thirdly, the previous mods done to PR v0.5 by the CDU folks were not merely an adjustment to spawn timers, nor were they just minor changes to how PR plays... just about everything that could be tweaked and adjusted was adjusted. The net effect was an instance of the mod that played nothing like PR.

and finally, this is really all about one clan's obstinate attitude towards PR developers and our design goals as a mod project.

Ok, spell it out. What are PR acceptable changes? What can be changed and not need to be passworded?

Well surely if you talked to Egg nicely about it via PM/e-mail or IM software you could come to some sort of an arrangement about producing a mini-mod.

I don't mean over a forum board like yours (which I've read and it's a ****ing travesty the amount members you have which are either pre-pubescent ten year-olds or people who are just outright ignorant and assume it's their god given right to be an arsehole).

I did read Eggmans statement on your forums about passwording the server. Some of the Vets and Admins seemed perfectly reasonable in their arguments, others were just complete and utter C.U.N.T.S. They seemed to think that the mod was somehow theirs and the DEVs can't change a thing. Wrong.

You might want to review your member base.

The mini mod was proposed and rejected by Egg. If he is open to it, I'd be glad to help. I think it is a great idea.

Eddie, exactly what is your role within PR?

@ Jochen re: what can be changed: still evaluating that.

re: mini mod. you are making that out as tho I flatly rejected the idea. I explained to you the overheads in managing codebases, testing, releases, etc. PR is NOT a simple piece of software and we have no interest in maintaining two codebases and testing impacts across those two codebases when we make changes.

we designed the mod to appeal to a specific type of player and the bottom line is if you are not that type of player, play a different mod... move on, get over it and stop this inane pissing contest. There's lots of great mods out there that might appeal to you folks without pissing off their mod community and their development team.

Now do you understand what I mean about sincere intent? You folks have no interest in our mod and gaming community, y'all just like the attention (and y'all have stated as much several times).

Again this whole thing is all about ONE CLAN and their obnoxiousness about an issue we already flogged to death in March of this year. But I guess the need for attention cropped up again.

Its gonna come down to a few things.. 1. They either are better off for it and thats great if that happens. 2. They loose a player base and fracture the community they have built in half. Half of them going the route PR is going now and the other half who want to be able to edit and do SSM's.

Either way that this occurs is the way it occurs. I'm sure they weighed the pro's and con's before comming to the decision. I'm not a PR player period. Thats my choice. I dont care for it personally. But the PR Dev team will live with their decision be it right or wrong. The decisions they make pave the way for various events that will come about because of those decisions. Good or bad, whatever happens is going to happen. They will either be as I said, better off or in a bad predicament.

Its not up to any of you or myself what they do with their mod. Its their hard work. They are doing what they need to as I said in regards to the situation. I generally dont get involved in these discussion for various reasons but people need to understand that these guys want their mod played a certain way and they are going the lengths to make sure of it. Is it right or wrong? Not my decision. They will recieve their judgement from the community soon enough over their choices. Good luck to all of you during this. For the fans who dont mind the changes then keep playing as if nothing happened.. TO those that are against it.. Then perhaps you guys are the swing votes. I just hope that the Mod doesnt suffer detrimentally from anyones choices. Good luck to all.
