Why don't you two just settle it in-game instead of clogging up a useful thread designed for helping people in their game with your mindless, childish arguments. Grow up.

Do you guys hear the gunshots from 250m away? I don't. Just the bullets hitting near me or hitting me.

The bullets do make a whizzing sound when they pass through the air if they miss you. It's hard to make out exactly where they're coming from, but it can give you an idea to the general direction.

                    Greetings Snipers
I have a question to ask

how do you rate how effective a sniper is?
By KDR or Points per minute or accuracy?

                      Re: Success with Sniping
                      • KDR of at least 3:1 on the Sniper Rifle (NOT the Sniper Kit)
                      • Accuracy of at least 50%
                      • Total kills made by Sniper Rifle of 4000 or higher

Just my view on things. I usually compare Snipers on their Rifle score (so how high up it is) and after that check both Accuracy and KDR.

With 3:1 , 50% and 4000 kills you are left with maybe 500 Snipers in the game. so that gives a good measure on things.

KDA's, kills, and flag defends mainly. It's hard to guage because, as I sort of ranted over earlier, you can be an excellent shot and a terrible asset to your team.

As I also said, I don't judge anything by K/D. If you're being a hyper-aggressive SVD junkie killing everything that moves and dying a lot in the process, you may be contributing more than someone who sits behind the lines being useless until they have that "perfect shot." Kills minus deaths over time is a better measure.

Accuracy can be misleading as well. Squadding (because of the number of moving targets) and using semi-autos (because you can afford to be hasty when your next shot is ready to go) can artificially lower your accuracy. Refusing to take anything but a clean shot will also raise your accuracy, but is actually the mark of a poor player.

In other words, stats can't really give you a clear picture of how good someone is, even when they do you have to read between the lines and figure out what someone is really doing.

                          Re: Success with Sniping

I'm no pro sniper like some of you here, but I'll have to agree with PHPT, because I'm one of those who'll usually only take the shot when I know I can get a hit (even then, i miss often with ping at 200). Doing that will make the stats look better for a number of reasons:
                          1. Obviously you miss less
                          2. One hit kills = enemy can't find you = less death
                          3. Less movement = less exposure = less death
                          4. Less death = less time spent getting into position = more kills & less death
                          5. More kills & less death = better KD (duh :) )

Prolly more to it. I have however practiced taking running shots. I modded my single player to 32 bots, so in any single player game I'll have 14 vs 18 (expert of course) giving me lots of moving targets to practice sniping with. Bots very rarely stop to shoot. Improved my game a bit on servers where I can get low ping.

However, I find that my role as a lone sniper also beneficial to the team as from my vantage point (no not on a crane. lol) I can spot enemies, warn my team of an impending flag rush, spot jets (I think pilots will really apreciate this) and act as a mobile spawn point (though I don't understand why people never spawn on me when I ask them to even if I've managed to sneak way behind enemy lines), and defend flags.

Just my little experience and 2 cents. ( =

                            Re: Success with Sniping

I still find it amusing to read that unless you are working the frontline with a semi-auto, a Sniper is considered worthless.
The number of times I saved Tanks from C4 guys, covered people that are swimming, killed guys in the AA so our BlackHawk could drop its load or spotted Armor trains for our Airsupport (to name just but a few things) are so numerous I have lost count.
One of the best parts is penetrating deep in enemy territory and getting a Squad in to take a CP. Or if you cannt get anybody in take the CP yourself and by doing so redirect a substantial part of the enemies resources in trying to cap the CP back. I would call that very effective in terms of controlling the flow and pace of the game.
So apart from having some numbers to back me up (KDR & Accuracy are the Stats the dedicated Snipers in this game use to compare Ranks) I know for fact that an effective Sniper helps out his team progress on a map during the game. I know I do at least.

                              Most of the time, yep.

I've saved tanks from C4 with pretty much everything, so that's not much of an example. Knocking out AA is situational, reinforcing troops during a flag capture is not. Picking off enemies to help force a CP cap is markedly less effective than just picking medic and making your capture force practically invincible.

The vast majority of snipers I've seen are little more than a moderately-annoying distraction, and provide far less of a benefit than a simple front-line fighter.

Your rifle KDR is rigged, we already went over that. Snipers can measure themselves by accuracy all they want, but accuracy is a split measure of how good of a shot you are and how many shots you give up. Cherry-picking every shot doesn't make you good. That's why KDA/kills over time is a better measure.

I think people miss seeing a lot of what snipers are doing to help. A great deal of a sniper's job is to prevent enemy forces (enemy snipers, people manning 50. cal's on jeeps, enemy support players, etc) from taking out those who are brave enough to charge in.

A lot of the problem is that they never know they're being helped... something to think about.
