John Smedley hasn't exactly had it easy these past few months. It should perhaps then come as no surprise that Smedley has decided to step down as the CEO and President of Daybreak Game Company (formerly SOE).

A spokesperson for Daybreak issued a short comment on the move.

Daybreak Games, the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment and the studio currently developing H1Z1 and EverQuest Next was hit with a huge number of layoffs.

These include David Georgeson, the person most recognized as the "face" of EverQuest. His official title was the Director of Development on EverQuest Next. The company's Global Community Relations lead, Linda "Brasse" Carlson was also laid off. She served as the host for the past five SOE Live conventions....

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has been acquired by investment management firm Columbus Nova and will turn its focus to multi-platform titles. With this acquisition, SOE will be rebranded as Daybreak Game Company LLC and will "continue to focus on creating quality online games."
