  • EverQuest Next May be Dead Following Massive Layoffs at Daybreak Games

Daybreak Games, the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment and the studio currently developing H1Z1 and EverQuest Next was hit with a huge number of layoffs.

These include David Georgeson, the person most recognized as the "face" of EverQuest. His official title was the Director of Development on EverQuest Next. The company's Global Community Relations lead, Linda "Brasse" Carlson was also laid off. She served as the host for the past five SOE Live conventions. She also spoke at game conventions on SOE's behalf and been a panel moderator for a number of events.

There are some estimates that place the total number of layoffs at between 40% to 50%. This has led many to speculate that at least one major project has been cancelled. Given that H1Z1 is the "new" kid in town and was just started to be sold to the public, we could perhaps safely assume that EverQuest Next is now dead. That means that the only real part of that game that will see the light of day is Landmark.

The only official response from the studio was the following statement sent to Kotaku.
As part of a strategic decision to rationalize the business, Daybreak Game Company announced today that it will eliminate positions in both its San Diego and Austin studios. This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments, including delivering on its legacy of making top online games and establishing a solid foundation for future multi-platform success. These reductions will not affect the operation of current games and the company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future and push the boundaries of online gaming.

The best of luck to all employees that were laid off and those that may still yet be laid off in the coming days.
