yeah, i wrote a really big comment, but then pressed alt+0175 with the numpad off (numpad7 = home; alt+home = go home, in my case Google), it went to Google (my home page) and i lost my comment. so that's why i posted just that.

wow ... doesnt sound like they are trying to make money... geese... (note the incredible amount of sarcasm)
you're right, damn those bastards, who do they think they are - making money off the games industry? so what if they worked full time for a few years in a row, it's not right to make money off that, now is it? now, don't even get me started with those movies! why do i have to pay money just to see some entertainment, be it in a movie theatre or at home (DVD)? that's ridiculous! i mean, what are they thinking!?! ;\

sorry, but it pisses me off when ignorant jerks expect quality games (that many people spent thousands of hours on) to be free. go start a riot about car companies charging you money for cars, and leave the game industry alone. :o (i'm planning to be a game developer too, so that's partly why i'm so upset)

So you download HL2 via steam....what happens when you feel like un-installing it?

    Ooops no more HL2 :/
yeah, sort of like credit cards, eh? i mean, whoop, u forget ur password and all your money's lost, no? or buying stuff online? i mean, u could get HACKED! that's money lost, right there. or ebay... or...

what i'm saying is, it'll be more secure than u think. u will not be able to 'delete' ur account, so even if u format ur hard-drive, and login with the old account again, u will have access to hl2 again.

oh, and how am i so sure? well, i'm not, but if i'm going to assume i'll make sure not to diss the company while i'm at it. bottom line is, u have no freakin' clue how this'll work, so why don't u just wait until VALVe finalizes this new revolutionary service (as in, nothing like it's been done before, thus it's new to all of us), and then explains it all in full detail to everyone (not some dude that shared his private email with everyone, thus confusing the slower ones).

there. that's my opinion. please, feel free to 'comment' on it.

Why is it poeple think HL2 has to be implemented the same way as HL?

Valve is under no obligation to release CS2 or TF2 as free mods just because CS and TF were originally free mods for Half-Life and Quake.

HL2, TF2 and CS2 are all completely new games seperate from their predecessors. Might sound painfully obvious but it seems to be hard for some to understand.

As to the payment methods, if you can't figure what to do about the multiple options just buy the boxed HL2 with mutli/mod support from a store as usual, then have access to all the patches/updates and user-made mods for free as usual.

If ya just want TF2 or CS2, wait for those games to be released and buy them as you normally would.

the best part is when gabe talked about how all HL2 mods would cost $50.

          except he never did.

Can you imagine if they charged $50 for HL2 and then, a few months later, charged $50 for CS2? I think they're smart enough not to do that.

Quick, somebody tell VALVe that their plan is faulty, and will only work if they give away all of their hard work, which took them five years!
Actually, I think it would be smart on their part because I would buy both in a heartbeat. I also know that I'm not the only one that would. As it stands, I'm going to get the regular Retail SP/MP thingie since it's the easiest and what I'm used to. I'm not going to make any judgements on the other choices until I hear more about it.

I'm not staying long, because I don't want the stupidity to rub off on me.

Anyway, just a thought boys: Chances aren't bad that if you buy the full version of HL2, then other content from VALVe (such as CS2 or TF2) will be available at a reduced rate.

One more thing. I doubt mod authors will be able to charge for their mods. That's the difference between mods and stand-alone games. Mod makers get to use the Source engine for free, but their product must also be free, and reliant on a Source-based game, such as HL2, in order to boost sales of that base game.

That said, CS2 and TF2 are not mods like their predecessors were. They are separate games based on the Source engine, much like Quake 3 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault are separate games based on a common engine (or pick any of the plethora of other games based on the Q3 engine).

I have to wonder how many mods will actually turn up on Steam. Probably a decent amount, but most likely only the VALVe-sponsored ones (like the current CS, DoD, TFC, Ricochet, and DMC of HL, but likely different mods). I can't imagine VALVe loading up a 500MB install of "GordonRapex0r2Mod" onto all their content servers and letting their bandwidth get eaten alive.

Anyway, if everything turns out as I expect it to, I'll have HL2 for free regardless. Having connections to cool people is a beautiful thing. :)

So, in summation for me, plz. The only way I can play multiplayer and play the Modifications for Half Life 2, I have to purchase and download the game off of the Steam System? And, if I want to goto a game store, I only get the single player. If this is correct, Bullcrap I say!

For those of you concerned about the pay to play rumor, fear not! You can purchase the game normally as a boxed unit from a retailer or through Steam with a one time payment. This will allow you to enjoy the mods, multiplayer, and of course single-player content of Half-Life 2.

lol ... Valve are kicking themselves out of business this way ! This is so cool ... ever since they took over work on cs, they ruined the mod ! Now they even want to make the community pay for this, but instead Valve are gonna pay for it ! It's good I haven't ordered HL2 yet, cos now I won't buy this game anymore. And I also won't buy CS2 as a standalone as I won't install this little worm called Steam on my system. Valve is changing everything that made them rich with HL and CS, they're trying to make everything in a different way now. Great, Valve and CS are finally going down, they've ruined everthing.

So the decision is made, I'm gonna buy Far Cry instead. The game has much better graphics anyway and I'm sure it can be played on the internet without having to install a worm first plus mods should be for free for this game ...

Valve - the laugh of the year !

Really people - READ THE FRICKIN POSTS COMPLETELY. So many people here are just speculating on stuff that has already been explained in detail. Just read it slowly and thoroughly so you can let it soak through those extra-thick McDonald's shake lovin heads of yours.

I read the article and interview completely and feel completely comfortable with what they are going to do - it's only fair to get paid for WHAT YOU DO. The labor is worthy of it's hire. Quit whining, get jobs, or beg your parents for more money and then shut the hell up.

I always thought that HL2 was worked on the day that HL hit the shelves? At least thats what valve is saying.
