guess it's useless to post any kind of explanations, since people ignore the bigger comments (like mine :P ), scroll down all the way to the bottom, and reply to things like "what i gotta pay 9 bux this sux valve sux u sux" with things like "yeh lol col hah ok."

software companies exist to make money. this is valves way of making money. lets just hope big gabe (literally) stops seeing dollar signs and start thinking about the community.

referring to the release date i agree, a buggy game will be a disaster.

referring to whether having a $10 /month subscription is good or not, i doubt that if valve have extra revinue, their games will improve. the more revinue a game company have. the greedier they will become. when valve released HL they put as much effort as they could in it, without even thinking about the huge revinenue it would generate. if valve stop seeing dollar signs in front of their noses and concentrate on making HL2 a damn fine game. then their hard work will be rewarded. it would be a shame to see valve become another greedy corporation whose sole purpose is to make money. like many other game companies out there.

yeah possibly the SOLE thing that made HL last as long as it did (almost 6 years now) are the FREE mods that were available to create new gameplay etc. if the "FREE", in FREE MODS goes, then HL2 could go down with it. then again, many companies make their strategic judgements based on greed, rather than anything else.

What if, say now after Natural Selection 2.0 established itself as a good HL MOD, NS wanted to sell it's MOD. I'd bet that would beat that paypal method they've got going. People would pay for it, and they wouldn't have to find a publisher to get it to box, they just set up an account on Steam.

But yeah, if say Monkeystrike tries to go for-pay, it'd go right down the shitter.
shit thats a really good point! with steam, mod makers, even smaller software companies that dont have the financial resources (or dont want to pay revinue royalties to giant publishers) could use steam to act as a boxless distributor for their software.

valve *might* have hit the jackpot with their steam delivery content by eliminating the middlemen (publisher + retail store).

exactly, CS has nothing to do with HL. Its a totally different game. All HL does is provide the engine to run CS from. like RTCW, uses quake3 engine. different game.

One more thing. I doubt mod authors will be able to charge for their mods. That's the difference between mods and stand-alone games. Mod makers get to use the Source engine for free, but their product must also be free, and reliant on a Source-based game, such as HL2, in order to boost sales of that base game.
what if in the HL2 EULA, valves states, like they do now, that any mod created for the source engine, is property of valve?

lol ... Valve are kicking themselves out of business this way ! This is so cool ... ever since they took over work on cs, they ruined the mod ! Now they even want to make the community pay for this, but instead Valve are gonna pay for it ! It's good I haven't ordered HL2 yet, cos now I won't buy this game anymore. And I also won't buy CS2 as a standalone as I won't install this little worm called Steam on my system. Valve is changing everything that made them rich with HL and CS, they're trying to make everything in a different way now. Great, Valve and CS are finally going down, they've ruined everthing.

So the decision is made, I'm gonna buy Far Cry instead. The game has much better graphics anyway and I'm sure it can be played on the internet without having to install a worm first plus mods should be for free for this game ...

Valve - the laugh of the year !
well since youre posting on CSN im pretty sure you will buy HL2/CS2 eventually...

and since when are graphics directly proportional to the enjoyment of the game? CS has dated graphics by 2days standards, but who cares? its damn fun to play!

Some people, like EyTschej, are really thick in the head. You seem to have a problem with buying the full version of HL2 which includes mods, patches, the normal stuff for one price like any other game. You only pay the subscription if you choose that option and the only games you will pay for aren't mods anymore. They are stand alone games where the designers and such need to be paid to feed their families. Really now, what is the difference between HL2 and Far Cry in terms of how you buy it? That's right, not one difference, except you are given more choices with HL2 based on how you'll play the game.

Pharlap - You'r a cynical bitch that needs to cheer up and see things on the bright side.

Even if NO mods come out for HL2, it will still be huge. If HL2 follows the success equation of HL1, they will allow people to make free mods for the public to enjoy. And even if they do so, there is no guarantee that the mods won't suck ass and the public lose interest in the game and finally lose faith in Vale.

Bottom line, CS wouldn't be CS without valve, so stop you'r whineing

I'm going to buy HL2 via Steam just to prove that there are a bunch of fucking retards here....

You see folks nothing has really 'changed' has it. You can still buy HL2 in a box at a store, and it will come with multiplayer support and Mod support. However Valve added (not 'changed' but added) 1) a more stripped down boxed version and 2) a more elaborate package of the boxed version. Plus they added Steam, which will (hopefully) defeat the majority of cheating. HOW CAN YOU ARGUE WITH THAT?

And to the ass-trout thats calling Steam a 'worm'. Grow a set, hacker...

NICE! This paying for Valve created mods idea seems good to me. Let's take a gander at the current CS. Most of the community is absolutely stupid(as you can tell from most of these posts :P), and the average age is also fairly young. Maybe since they'll have to pay for CS2, there won't be as many of 'em as there are today. OH! and who would want to get banned from a game they paid for by cheating? Yay for Valve!

What I wonder is if CS2 will support HL2 mods the way the retail version of CS supports HL mods now. IF SO, I will probably just buy that. And don't come back with your "lololol retail nub" shit because there will no longer be "different versions" in the sense of mod vs retail.

Why won't I buy HL2 in this case? Well HL already scares the fuck out of me... Just put me in a quiet location.. and pop and headcrab in my face... and I'm on the floor. Just being honest here, if CS2 supports mods, that's the way I'm going. :)

Are we sure that CS2 is standalone?
However there is a catch; when new content is released by VALVe, such as expansion packs, Team Fortress 2 or Counter-Strike 2, you will have to pay separately for those games.
I don't care if it isn't, I wanna play HL2, you won't get the gravity gun thingy in CS2.

                          edit

I think it actually is standalone after reading at HL2.net, but I'll leave the comment here to see if someone misses this and trolls me.

Hmm, how many games has "Valve" made(and released) since HL in 1998? Zero! So paying 10 a month might be a bit much.

Also, what if I pay 10 dollars d/l HL2 beat it in say 48 hours then cancel my account? I don't wanna play HLDM MP anyhow. Only costs me 10 bucks? That's a good deal

Then just wait for CS2 to come out for 50 and your done. 60 bucks you get 2 games. Not bad.

Now remember if you d/l any of these games you don't get the pretty box to display around your computer to show off to your friends(if that's important).

Also Steam (for me) is still extremely slow loading and switching maps on CS servers for 1.6 now. Let's hope valve doesn't make us use steam to connect to CS2 servers too.

Yeah my reasoning for assuming so was.. that it wasn't a mod, so it would have to be a standalone.

Therefore, assuming that U R both correct, why is everyone bitching about paying for CS2 - IT IS NO LONGER A MOD BUT STANDALONE, AS IN A SEPERATE GAME NOW!!!

I can see where the people who think contrary to the above are coming from, CS1 was a MOD so why not CS2, but then again one of the creaters of CS now works for VALVe and the expected quality of CS2 would mean shelling out again
