I pre-orderd HL2 weeks ago, so what bloody version is going to appear on my doorstep?

Charging to play mods is an extremely bad idea. If this concept was put into the first half-life, no one would have bothered with CS and it wouldn't be as big as it is today.
i believe valve is only charging for the mods/addons/whatever that are being commercially developed - made to sell. i don't think they willl be charging/could charge for any community developed mods.Comment

If they charge for CS2, I will personally murder gooseman in his sleep for allowing CS to become a commercial thing. Not including CS Retail, at least it was an option to buy/download.Comment

Here's an excellent summary nabbed from timm @ the shack:Summary of options:
MISTKAES IN TEH AOBVE TXT IS NOT MY R FAULT I JST COPYIED IT FRM SHAKC!!11!!!- » 1: Retail box, singleplayer, no multiplayer - ONE TIME FEE!
» 2: Retail box, singleplayer and multiplayer - ONE TIME FEE!
» 3: Retail box, singleplayer, multiplayer and other unknown cool stuff (collectors edition) - ONE TIME FEE!
» 4: STEAM, singleplayer and multiplayer - ONE TIME FEE!
» 5: STEAM, subscription model. Pay a montly fee and have access to all Valve titles, including the stuff on STEAM now (HL, OpFor, CS, TFC, etc), Half-Life 2, all future stuff they put out, and so forth.
Patches (bugfixes, maintenance releases, etc) will be free no matter which of the six option you decide to go for.
Community-based mods will be free unless the authors want to charge for them. Free community based mods will/can be made available though STEAM free of charge.
STEAM will be the back-end of the multiplayer game, regardless if which version you get (Retail or STEAM download). Obviously, the retail singleplayer release doesn't require STEAM to be installed. There is a chance STEAM will not require an internet connection, but this is still unconfirmed.
Mod authors will be dribbling at the thought of charging players. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the PocketPC games industry - $30 for a game that should be freeware (poor quality).
Remember everyone, these are the pricing plans Valve are thinking about. Nothing is certain!Comment

Yea, im the same. So can i just buy the MOD's and have no monthly payments, or do i need to buy them then pay to play them? OR buy them, then pay the monthly fee for the updates for them?

*Update* So what about CS2, and TFC2 DOD(whatever) whenever they come out, do i have to pay monthly to play CS2 for the services of steam providing it, or do i only need to pay once for it too? Will CS2 be available to buy via CD? the extra payments are for those mods in which valve co produce, so will this price affect CS2?
BTW thanks Dave for clearing that up, at least i know about the HL2 multiplayer now.
Hope its not delayed, Apparently GAME says it won't be out untill late october

DaveJ, don't forget one big part, the no-multiplayer one is also a NO-MOD one. Here's how I see it:- » Half-Life 2 Lite on CD (No Multiplayer, No MOD's) [1-time fee]
» Half-Life 2 Full on CD [1-time fee]
» Half-Life 2 Collector's Edition on CD (with fanboy extras) [1-time fee]
» Half-Life 2 Full via Steam [1-time fee]
» Half-Life 2 Subscription via Steam (free MOD's like TF2 and CS2) [$9.95/month fee]Comment

No, you can buy it off the shelf, in a box, for a one off price.
SO this means everyone is going to have to pay 9.95 a month for CS2 multiplayer?Comment

Didn't someone say that there would be a catch to steam from the start? I just can't think of his name...
Oh right, that was me.Comment

Its not really a catch at all, you can still purchase games at normal price, you don't have to choose the snazzy subscription option.

Its just like buying it in the shop, but without the box. Or CD.Comment

After reading some more, the subscription doesn't get you free access to MODs like TF2 and CS2, it gets you (from what I can tell) free access to any game that VALVe makes!Gabe Newell wrote..
TF2 isn't a MOD, correct. However the subscription will be for anything we make. So when TF2 ships, the subscribers get it as part of their subscription.

If a mod team is dumb enough to charge for their mod before it becomes good enough to be a retail product, nobody will buy it and the mod will fail.
Also: for everyone complaining about Valve screwing people, realize this:
You can still buy it from a store, for probably around $50, like any other game. You can play mods and multiplayer for free.
If you want to play TF2 and (likely) CS2 you will purchase them as seperate games, most likely for less than the cost of HL2.
These games are not really mods anymore. They are their own games that happen to use the Source engine. They cost money to develop. They are not free.Comment

Still not really worth it, there would be something like a minimum term contract, and in that time they might make a load of games that you don't want.Comment
