Is Steam ever actually needed EVER to play CS. Cause from what I have worked out, it is only like an auto-patch program, and should be optional. The only time it will become required is if CS Team stop releasing installers and do it through Steam. Is this correct?

HELP!!!!
anyone,
ive downloaded off that proggie thingo. Its stored into my cache.
Amazinly, i only downloaded 10mb and i see a 512mb file in the cache :/
weird, now!
i try running it, works ok, like 1.0. Then try start a LAN or NET game. Screen pops up and a bar sits there, i left it for about 2 hours, thought might be downloading recources... Nope, exactly where it was 2 hours ago.
Then, tried pasting, all the files from cache into my counter-strike dir. Then tried running it and an error came up about that cache file which is 512mb....
im stumped fellas, help me out hereComment

Oh yeah mostly this is really good stuff! Really! The biggest plus is that no more bunny whoppers! That jumping "energy" system works and it make it more realistic. Theres appears to be more recoil and movement make it harder to shoot and thats good. But theres a big minus wich i really think whysso? Why's the weapons names are changed? They are hilarious and amateurish. Sounds are another part, why there have to be those old "ugly" sounds? How about newones?
But anyway this is good step for going to CS 2.
8+ for me... GG CS team...
