Yes... and please don't sweat it about using the same map for your movie.

I'm not trying to use Oilfields as the "Battlefield 2" map, just as a setting for the scenery I need.

You say you’re using similar filming material for your movie? Then it's probably not the same thing, I'm not doing another battle movie - involving tanks. Hence forth, I'm not using Oilfields as the battle map, just because the games called "battlefield" and battle movies are supposed to be made.
Many people have used Oilfields in their movies, I know one now in production. Soon to be released in fact! and thats a battle movie.

I don't think I've seen any of your material or editing skills but anybody can change the look and feel of any map just in the editor if you feel the maps not doing justice.

Great to see everyone's still hard at work!

I'm relieved to see, NeoRicen, that you've resumed with EndGame, in spite of the difficulties and frustrations involved. Back when you were working on The Duel, I actually wondered to myself if you'd lost your enthusiasm for EndGame. As with some of the other projects in this thread, EndGame seems very ambitious and I know most of us here can appreciate the difficult in maintaining the enthusiasm and focus required to see something of that magnitude through to completion. I expect my next 2-3 projects to be relatively small-scale—perhaps just a few minutes apiece—but I also like the idea of doing something far more demanding, so I consider you guys the trailblazers ...

I must admit, in reading through the comments you left for C22's Echo Squad: Sharqi Liberation—especially where you qualified: "I'm a bit more picky than the average movie watcher"—I found myself all the more keen to see the first instalment of EndGame. There's certainly nothing wrong with being particular about what you like to see. To me, it just means you've spent a lot of time thinking about how things should look, sound and feel. Always better to have a well-considered view on how to achieve quality than few ideas at all, even if that sometimes translates to more criticism when providing feedback for others. :)

Smiley, I'm also pleased to know you'll be releasing your project on the 21st, as planned! I really think you should submit the trailer as a News Item on this site so that it receives front page coverage. As I'm sure you know, nowhere near as many people view the Media forum as they do the main pages and it'd be a shame to put in all that time and effort without reaching the widest possible audience. Anyone can see from the trailer that it's a unique concept and high-quality project, so I can't see any reason why the admins would be unwilling to help with its promotion.

Dsp-CS- (Dmitry?), Sir. Side, Xalias and Keyelite, Little_Donkey and StRuPiE, I hope you're all continuing to make solid progress and that you'll soon provide us with updates (especially screenshots, timelines and projected completion dates). Also, I'd really like to hear from sMull. Where are you, man? Encounter was such a great project and I really want to see more from you. Are you and Jevus still intent on doing a video for each of the classes within BF2?

I'm still doing preparation work for my BF2 trailer project. I know what piece of music I'd like to use and because the running time is under three minutes, it shouldn't take very long to film all the shots I have in mind. My main problem is that I keep wanting to complicate things by adding new elements. On the plus side, I already have a clear idea in my head of how most of the shots are going to be filmed and synchronised with the music, so when it comes time to start recording and editing, I should be able to create the whole thing in under three weeks. I've also arranged all my data in such a way as to free up half a terabyte of disk space, so that'll come in handy! :p

Progress has been slowed by the decision to learn Sony Vegas but it'll let me do a few things that I can't do with Premiere Pro on its own … and I'm going to hold off on acquiring software like Combustion and/or After Effects until I'm ready to take that next step. I just don't want to get ahead myself. I figure if the learning phase is too protracted, I'll just end up feeling frustrated and impatient and that's when I struggle to make forward progress.

Speaking of Vegas, I'd love to hear from everyone using it how they went about mastering its features. When I decided to learn Premiere Pro, it was ridiculously easy to find educational resources. For $170 via eBay, I bought the Total Training DVDs presented by Jacob Rosenberg and in bookstores I managed to find some massive textbooks to compliment the knowledge picked up via those DVDs. When I tried the same stores for books about Vegas, they had absolutely nothing! I've since found a number of useful resources on-line and though I'm sure they'll prove sufficient, I'd still like to know how everyone else progressed from knowing nothing about the application to reaching their current level of understanding. What resources did you use? What do you recommend? Spare no detail. Right now, for example, I'm working my way through the VTC video tutorials presented by David Ludwig. Ninety-two lessons in all and I've only made it through the first thirty-eight.

Oh well, I'm getting there! I feel like I already understand Vegas about as well as I did Premiere Pro, so that's reassuring ...

P.S. Try clicking on the RapidShare link below. I'm not sure what to make of that ...

To do picture-in-picture, put the clip you want smaller on a higher track, and use pan / crop to make it smaller and put it where you want it.

As for "about how things should look, sound and feel", that's a matter of opinion. It just may be that the way something came out is the way that it was intended to.

So, what's the secret to getting things on the front page? I've sent two emails, but obviously that's not the way to do it.

Oh, absolutely, [C22] yrethguad. At the end of the day, it's still highly subjective, I agree. I just mean that some things are generally considered higher-quality than others. Smooth camerawork, for example, invariably looks better than sloppy camerawork, adherence to certain film-making principles usually leads to work enjoyed by wider audiences, etc. I do agree that "quality" itself, though, is impossible to define. (Ever read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? Great book on the subject of 'quality'!)

I've no idea but it's been done before, so I figure it's possible for the rest of us! Seems silly that 24 hours can elapse without any real news updates on this site when they could so easily add, for example, a nice write-up and some screenshots for a deserving project like the one you guys recently released.

I'm not 100% certain that each of these allow for files of that size but I'm confident practically all of them do. I ended up using most of these as mirrors for Khalid's Surprise, so I'd recommend using at least one or two (if not all). I'll list them and then do a small write-up for each. You're probably already familiar with the majority of them but I'll share my thoughts / experiences just in case someone else is interested in the same information.

                      1. BF2S Files
                      2. Movie Factory
                      3. RapidShare
                      4. Battlefield 2 Files
                      5. FileFront
                      6. BF2 Sweden
                      7. Machinima.com

Here's some of what I know about each (hopefully some other people can share the experiences they've had with these and other file hosting services):

                      1. BF2S: Excellent speeds and big audience. They only accept high-quality projects (yours would be a shoe-in, I would think) and as far as I know, it's still necessary to contact one of their admins to explain you have a nice little BF2 video and you need a host. They disabled the feedback section because it was being abused but they have left the 'rating' feature intact, so that people can give your project a rating out of five. I didn't have to upload my video to BF2S; they just acquired a copy from one of the other mirrors and added it to the list of files they were hosting.

                      2. MovieFactory: I love this site! I don't speak French but it's a French site completely dedicated to BF2 movies. Again, great speeds and a significant audience. If they like your project, they'll post it on the front page with a screenshot and a positive write-up. They'll host the file from their own server and your movie will have its own page for feedback. Admittedly, all the feedback will be in French but I managed to chat with some people on there (including the creator / administrator of the site) and found them to be genuinely good people. The creator speaks english and is always on the look out for new videos, so again ... it's not necessary to upload your file there. They can and do acquire the files from pre-established mirrors. If you're interested in checking it out, here's the MovieFactory Feedback Page for Khalid's Surprise.

                      3. RapidShare: I'm sure you're familiar with RapidShare! I used to stick up for them until they banned my video. Bastards! Then again, I had more than a thousand downloads via RapidShare, so I still think it's an okay host. I usually get excellent speeds from them, too. The only drawback is that a lot of potential downloaders find the process of getting to the file laborious and sometimes (perhaps because 30 seconds of reading / thought is required for those unfamiliar with the site), it's enough to stop them from downloading. Uploading to RapidShare is so simple and straightforward, though ... I think that's one of their main pros.

                      4. Battlefield 2 Files: Personally, I'm not a big fan of BF2 Files because of the unmoderated feedback. Seems every time I download a file from there, the regulars have left childish, sometimes even abusive feedback. For an extreme example, read the feedback left for THIS file. Regardless of whether or not people dislike a project, any feedback section that allows that kind of abuse toward content creators probably doesn't deserve your attention. Obviously not everyone who leaves feedback on that site is an abusive clown but it does seem to have one or two. Like anyone, I've got nothing against negative feedback but there's a subtle difference between someone writing, "I didn't like your movie because X, Y & Z," and someone exclaiming, "You're a ****ing **** and I want you to die!"

                      5. FileFront: Occasionally slow download speeds aside, it's not such a bad host. What's more, its popularity ensures everyone knows the procedure involved a getting a file from their servers. Plus, the uploading is very straightforward. I think it's an okay starting point but have at least one other mirror available before making the project available to everyone.

                      6. BF2 Sweden: Another great site with a lot of members and therefore, a wide audience. I'm certain they'd be happy to host your video and, like the MovieFactory site, they'll give the project its own page for feedback, comments, ratings, etc. I found Khalid's Surprise on there a couple of weeks after its initial release, so there's a good chance they'd track down and host An American Baby In Iraq if you do a good job spreading the word! Alternatively, you could try contacting them directly and asking if they wouldn't mind hosting the file.

                      7. Machinima.com: You'd think this would be the global hub for machinima enthusiasts but the amount of feedback and downloads it yields is surprisingly limited! I'd still recommend that you submit the video to their site but chances are you'll get a hell of a lot more feedback from the BF2 community than you will a broad cross-section of machinima enthusiasts.

Of course, there are plenty of others -- FileCloud, for example -- but those above are the only ones with which I've had any personal experience. I want to hear from other people that can recommend good hosts! We should create a really detailed list for people to use.

Good to see you still around john Paul :p I check the site from time to time, watching new videos I had the idea for the next video ever since i finished encounter, but i was busy with school and work, and a few days ago i even started Battlefield to try capturing a video but got frustrated because the movie controls are so limited compared to what i want to do and i just quit :|: I know Battlefield is not a movie making game, but i wish i could do more with it So i decided to make another move, i just need to collect some footage first

Wow jp, thanks for that writeup of good hosting sites.. that will come in handy when i release mine..

I will also like to state for streaming sites, you would want to use google video, youtube, and putfile.

Google Video is excellent becasue of the ease of use and how many random viewers you can get.. You can see how many views and downloads your video has if YOU are the one who uploaded it.. so make sure you upload it before anyone else does. Not to mention they recently added the comments section so you can now comment on videos you see.. I reccomend this one the most. www.video.google.com

YouTube is excellent.. It has feedback, rating, and the amount of views. For the most part, youtube is fairly popular. This is a great alternative.. www.youtube.com

Putfile I used to not reccomend due to their horrible customer service and slow download speeds, but its very popular. It has the feedback, rating, and the amount of views.. www.putfile.com
